Consider. The man said if he had the chance, he would kill the man who produced the video which put our outrage industry into overdrive. What was stopping him from doing his religious duty? As a federal minister of the (failed) state of Pakistan, he very likely holds a gratis blue passport on which the US State Department could not have refused him a visa. Instead of inducing ordinary Pakistanis to murder that they can simply not commit because of the difficulty of a US visa, our man should have himself flown to California and done what was required.
As for setting a bounty on the head of a man who lives in the US, this theoretically religiously outraged person knows one thing very well: that his money is safe. Either the intending killer will never get a visa, or, if he does and manages to kill a worthless demon, he will promptly be arrested, tried for murder and be put away for long enough to never be able to claim the reward. The whole thing is a fraud. It can never come to fruition.
What minister Ghulam Ahmed Bilour — who should be prosecuted for what he did to the Pakistan Railways — wanted was to suck up to the terrorists who were after his blood. Now, with the lip service he paid to Islam, the man has been pardoned. And make no mistake: it is only and only lip service. Those who pardoned him for simply saying something he never intended to do in the service of Islam are, therefore, of the same ilk. Their pardon of this man puts their love for religion in grave doubt. Or are they so simple-minded that they could not see through a very transparent ruse?
But one cannot really blame Bilour. Expending hot is all this entire nation is after all about. There are banners up across the country that address the film-maker warning him ‘ub tumhari khair nahi’. All the ones I have seen carry a minjanib footnote with the name of the man threatening Nakoula Basseley Nakoula with dire consequences. What do these men intend to do about carrying out the threat?
Nothing. Pure and undiluted nothing. These are all empty threats. The blessed name of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) has been sullied and these people in Pakistan are simply expending hot air with no intention of doing anything practical about the matter. Instead of hurling empty threats, they should all be on their way to the US of A to sort out that Egyptian Copt.
Now for the outrage. The unbeatable Saroop Ijaz attributes it to what he aptly terms the outrage industry. But consider the television interviews of some young men in a Karachi rally Friday last week. When asked why they were there, one said for shughal — fun! The other one had no clue. You will be able to see these when the government eventually unblocks YouTube.
Consider also the image of the young man splashed across the front page of this newspaper the day after. The image is from Peshawar and the youngster is clearly a Pathan, who we all think are the best Muslims in Pakistan. The man is looking straight into the lens as he makes off with a sack full of loot!
Is this outrage at blasphemy?
We are not true to anything, not even to the religion we pretend to be madly in love with and are willing to die for. We are all liars, hypocrites and scamsters whose only service to a cause or belief, even religion, is only lip service. We are masters of expending hot air. And while we are at it, we do not hesitate to burn down our own country.
The real blasphemers who should be taken to task are in our midst. And Bilour sits at their head.

I knew the Bilour family in the early 60s, they had this shop in Qissa Khani Bazar and made their fortunes I don't want to go into detail. All I say is it was not earned up and up. Some one should tell us what has the family and even him done for the betterment of Peshawar people or the KP, they figured out the road to prosperity is to join political parties. I appreciate your article and it reflects the truth among us and would anybody take the time and internalize it, I doubt it. What has happened to us, the Pakistan or the KP I knew was not like this, I had friends with all sort of religious denominations and we never down graded their beliefs, they were just friends. People don't realize that our prophet Mohammad (pbuh) was taunted and persecuted by some but he always forgave them for their ignorance and non beliefs. Why go on killing rampage and destroy the country if some criminal in any other country blasphemise the holly book or our prophet, it really does not matter because our love for him is in our hearts and minds.
A bit strong perhaps, but one can understand the anguish and anger in Mr Rashid. Do the English media have any influence?
I believe we who care about our country should start educating the ignorant masses ,if I had the opportunity or the strength [ i am going through bone marrow cancer treatments ]what I would have started doing is to start arranging some tarbiatee recreational camps for youth there and I shouldn't discriminate any one because of their social class and teach them all some basic religious manner some character building of how to become a better citizen and blend it with some recreational competitions we have done it with our youth here and those youth are now in their professional lives now the most active and productive member of this society as muslims and as an American citizens . We should spread our activities throughout the country and fund our programs through the well of members of our society who appriciate these efforts this is not impossible and we should stop ridiculing other who have no aql aur zameer at all this is not taking us anywhere at all .
@Lala Gee: Liberal Fascism? No point playing with words. Show me one liberal who is a fascist.
@Lala Gee: That above average IQ just can't be hidden!
liberal fascist is an oxymoron
@Haris Chaudhry:
The sad saga of Pakistani society is that all right wing television anchors and journalists who condemned the movie before friday now criticizing the destruction came with protests. They are one who incited masses to go and protest now become the saints of Pakistani media. I would blame Hamid Mir, Ansar Abbassi, Harood Rashid and Irfan Siddiqui for airing their views. We already knew that movie was blaphemous, we did not have to burn our country to register our protest.
Calling a liberal a fascist is the same as calling a bald man hairy.
It is an oxymoron. Whoever invented the term 'Liberal-Fascit' to describe those that dont want the religion to be a state instrument in favouring one community at the expense of the other also invented slangs like liberal-extremists and secular-fundamentalists.
It is akin to calling a Muslim as non-hindu or non-christian .. It does not make sense.
The problem with Pakistan is the extremely low intellect of the masses that watch tabloid tv shows presented by people that have equally low intellect and understanding of bigger things and listening to empty slogans and chants from their political leaders who love stereotyping their opponents.
Sad state of affairs !
A liberal can never be a fascist and a fascist can never be a liberal. Liberalism is not about walking around naked in public. Liberals don't implement their agenda by force, they don't cut peoples heads. Infact the religious extremists are fascists who want to implement their agenda with force.
Lala jee - how is liberal Canada?
@gp65:
Imran Khan brags about having lived in the west and knowing their culture but I do not believe he even knows his own culture or himself very well.
PPP by declaring a national holiday has sunk to the darkness that it has left me with no hope. What else we have , right wingers and super right wingers.
Absolutely hardest hitting article. The minister should be sacked and prosecuted for his "words of wisdom" uttered when he is in a position of responsibility.
And young man did not have to leave the country to know ' benefits' of loot and plunder.
@Lala Gee: "If extremism is bad in religion, so is fascism in liberalism"
Just because Imran Khan uses the term liberal fascist and rest of the media has picked it up, does not mean that the term makes any sense. Please look up liberal and then also look up fascist. The 2 ideas cannot coexist.
A very truthful and honest analysis of the situation created by the rightwing terrorists and the bounty offered by a "politician". Even though I can understand the difficulty in living and surviving in KPK province these days still the politicians of secular parties should refrain from pandering to the extremists.
Sir great writing as usual. I am not sure if the said minister can even READ what you wrote or what you actually mean...thank you
The most clear thinking and unequivocal OpEd on this subject. Salute you for your courage.
@Author:
If extremism is bad in religion, so is fascism in liberalism. I guess both the mullah and the liberals are not very much different when it comes to exploiting the commoner. Both pseudo intellectuals are just selling their goods for personal profit.
