Statement jewellery: The rise of over size

When it comes to apparel, a majority of experts agree that less is more, understated is the way to go, and keeping it simple is the most effective style statement. However, on the subject of jewellery and accessories in general, the reverse applies not just at home but globally as well.

Chunky statement jewellery pieces and bright bold accessories are the order of the day. This delicate balance of yin and yang produces a harmony that is appealing to the senses. There is beauty in symmetry, which comes across in this resurging trend.

Add some bling to your ensemble with a prominent gold cuff such as the exquisite carved gold pieces from Maheen Karim and Madiha Sultan Tai’s collections. A broad cuff will complement any ensemble — be it contemporary, modern or traditional wedding wear — and will draw just the right amount of attention! Kiran Aman of Kiran Fine Jewellery (KFJ) is one of the most experienced designers of artistic statement jewellery in Pakistan. Her creations are a powerful manifestation of her emotions and she is renowned for her beaten gold signature pieces, which were also modelled by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy at the Oscars. Aside from classic gold or diamond, you can also opt for an antique creation such as a quintessential pearl and polki studded cuff from Sherezad’s latest polki collection. The neutral tones will pair up with any colour in your closet.

The chunky jewelled trend is not limited to just precious ornaments; ethnic beaded statement pieces are very much on top of the in-style list. Semi-precious stones offer a much more diverse range of colours and textures and will set you apart in any given crowd. Take a cue from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy for the Gucci Women in Cinema Awards at the Venice Film Festival that took place last month. The orange and ferozi necklace paired with a simple white kurta is exactly the kind of balance we’re talking about! Another cultural piece we loved was seen at Misha Lakhani’s store launch. An exceptional turquoise knotted number with matching brooches on the sleeve lapel of a neutral tan kurta. We wish we knew the designer for this one; we would have loved to share it with you. If anyone knows please do enlighten us as well!

The style was also spotted on the runway for India International Jewellery Week 2012. Heavy emerald and polki clustered neck pieces modelled by Nargis Fakhri and Sonam Kapoor were our top picks. Sherezad Rahimtoola at Labels is a genius of this technique at home. Bijoux by Rumeena Ishtiaq and Glitz Tressors specialise in quality semi-precious stone, shoes and over-sized cocktail rings that display a contemporary chic charm. If you’re a ring fanatic you will love their work!

Apart from jewellery, Maheen Karim shows us how to glam up an elegant ensemble with bold accessories in metallic gold, along with her signature line of handcrafted petal belts and brooches that adorn her creations. The effect adds that extra oomph factor and completely elevates the appeal of the entire look.

The addition of distinct accessories to your outfit has become essential these days due to the increase in commercial retailing of brands. If you want to stand out, make sure you’ve accessorised a bit!
