Colleague’s release: ‘PTI workers’ arrested for manhandling cop

ISLAMABAD:

Three alleged workers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) were arrested for manhandling a police official on Wednesday evening.

According to police sources, Raja Khurram Nawaz — who introduced himself as PTI’s potential National Assembly candidate from Islamabad — along with Saeedur Rehman and Amir Mughal were arrested after they entered the Aabpara Police Station, demanding the release of their colleague, Muhammad Ehtesham.

Ehtesham was arrested earlier during the day for damaging public property during recent riots over a sacrilegious film.

The three men insisted that Ehtesham was arrested illegally. However, the officer on duty, Head Constable Muhammad Fayyaz, said he does not have the authority to release the suspect. “This infuriated the PTI members, who tore the official’s uniform,” said a police official.

PTI Spokesperson Shafqat Mehmood, however, denied having any knowledge about the incident. “We have a very large membership and I don’t know who these men are,” he said. The suspects will be produced before the court on Thursday.
