Vettel, who won the Singapore Grand Prix, is now within 29 points of leader Alonso (194), whereas Button, who was second, now sits fourth, two points behind Kimi Raikkonen’s 149.
“It’s hard for anyone to catch Alonso except Seb at the moment,” said Button. “It’s between those two but there are still a lot of people with a long shot.”
Current season could be repeat of 2010
Meanwhile, Vettel said this year’s unpredictable Formula One title race could be shaping up to be a repeat of 2010, when he memorably sealed victory on the last day of the season.
Last year, Vettel cruised to his second successive title with 11 victories. But he said the ‘incredible’ current season, with seven different winners in 14 races, may be headed for a cliff-hanger.
“I don’t think Alonso would be too happy if it happened again in the last race,” said Vettel. “But it’s an incredible season for all of us.”
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner pointed out that Vettel ‘was 25 points down with two races to go in 2010, which indicates anything is possible for all the drivers’.
“It’s a tough championship so far but we’re still in it. We’re still looking forward to the next couple of races, and obviously the target at the moment is taking points off Fernando and beating him,” said Horner.
Schumacher gets 10-place penalty
Michael Schumacher was given a 10-place grid penalty for the Japanese Grand Prix after crashing into the backside of Jean-Eric Vergne in Singapore.
The Mercedes driver in the beginning suspected it was a car failure but later confessed it was his fault to the stewards, according to the BBC.
“I just went straight on the brakes very hard, locked up everything and tried to brake as hard as possible but the accident wasn’t avoidable anymore,” said Schumacher.
