Army called in to prevent protesters from entering diplomatic enclave
The US Embassy is one kilometre away from the entrance of the diplomatic enclave and there are no barriers inside. According to Express News correspondent Qamarul Munawar, if the protesters, who are present at the gate of the enclave, manage to break through, then it will result in chaos.
He added that the Army was called in as the police shelling remained ineffective in controlling the protesters.
Express News correspondent Haider Naseem reported that the protesters coming from Rawalpindi to Islamabad headed back after the police hurled tear gas at them.
Around 50 protesters and 38 police officials were injured during the riots who were shifted to the Polyclinic hospital.
An ulema delegation met with the IG Police and chief commissioner and agreed on a deal. Maulana Zahoor Alvi confirmed that the arrested protesters were also released.
SSP Traffic Police Islamabad Dr Moeen Masood told Radio Pakistan that the red zone of Islamabad will remain closed on Friday for traffic.
He said that the normal traffic would ply between the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi as well as within Islamabad.
Dr Masood added that 274 Islamabad police personnel were deployed for controlling traffic and they would remain alert on Friday as well.
Mobile services will also remain suspended in Islamabad tomorrow (Friday) from 9am-11pm to avoid any untoward incident.
Islamabad's heavily-guarded diplomatic enclave is home to most Western embassies, including the US, British and French missions.
Earlier during the protest, police fired live rounds and tear gas to break up a crowd of students, many armed with wooden clubs.
The crudely made Innocence of Muslims has triggered protests in at least 20 countries since excerpts were posted online, and more than 30 people have been killed in violence linked to the film.
There have been dozens of protests around Pakistan over the past week and at least two people have been killed, but Thursday is the first time protests in the capital have turned violent.
Police fired tear gas and live rounds as the protesters, chanting "We are ready to die to safeguard the Prophet's (pbuh) honour," tried to break through a barrier of truck containers set up to block access to the diplomatic enclave.
"I was ordered by my boss to disperse the crowd and that is why I had to open live fire but the aim was nearby trees and not the demonstrators," Zaman Khan, a police officer deployed at the picket said.
The firing forced the protesters to scatter, but they returned later to pelt the police picket with stones.
Student Asif Mehmood demanded police let the protesters through to the US embassy and urged harsh treatment for American pastor Terry Jones, notorious for past Quran-burning episodes and who is reportedly connected to the film.
"Terry Jones and the filmmaker should be sternly punished for playing with the feelings of Muslims. We will not tolerate this blasphemy," Mehmood said.
Fellow protester Rehan Ahmad said: "Islam is often ridiculed by America and the West and blasphemy is committed against our Prophet (pbuh) in the name of freedom of expression."

We are not a a nation, we are a mob ! How do deal with a mob ? Let the police do whats its doing, read nothing, and give Army the powers to police the country (not take over just let them act as a parallel force). Let the Army up investigative units and forensic labs and starts investigating one crime at a time. This is the only way forward because revamping the police system will never happen and Pakistan doesn't have the money or the will to do it.

They vent their worries and pent up passions on such occasions. Protesting this way seems to be the favourite way for Muslims all over. Even in Chennai/Madras, the Muslims were protesting violently for 5 days. Chennai had never seen such violence in the name of religion before. People doing namaz right on Anna Salai, in front of Spencer Plaza! I always thought my hometown was a peaceful place. Alas, the menace seems to be growing.

After September 11, 2001, there were some protests and verbal abuse of Indian and Pakistani living in the US. The US govt. immediately had a press conference and attorney General at the time Ashcroft said: anyone who abuses or hurts anyone just because they look foreign do not represent our true character as Americans, BUT the worst American. He also declared that any such abuse will be treated as a Hate Crime. The US media behaved responsibly and calmed the situation down. Now lets see what our Govt did when a US ambassador was brutally murdered along with three other Americans in Libya, they totally focussed on the third rate video that someone produced somewhere in California and endorsed the protests, nothing negative was said about the killers. Our Govt. endorsed the protests in Pakistan against the US and lawyers and other ignorant people like them when they burnt flags and broke into the Red zone again no one was arrested. No notice from the CJ either ! The interior minister invited protests instead and the media had all the fanatics talk about so called blasphemy rather than the barbaric way Muslims reacted.
I believe since most of the Muslims have lived such a inhibited life in their strictly controlled dictatorial countries that they cannot even understand what freedom of speech is. Those who have lived sometime outside were still not able to set their thinking free and that is why even the oxford educated leaders have the audacity to compare blasphemy with Holocaust. Violent protest accomplish one thing -- justifies stereotype of the intolerant Muslim willing to kill/harm anyone who offends him. These protest are yet another reason that many smirk when they hear the mantra "religion of peace". You need a Gandhi or Martin Luther King to emulate as they have demonstrated that peaceful/passive resistance can achieve enormous and positive results.
There are also groups and individuals in the West that take any opportunity to vandalize property and create mayhem as a form of fun, knowing that nothing will happen to them because the police cannot arrest everyone! The media should do a better job or showing how few or how many people are actually involved in the protests to give a true picture to the viewing public as to the real extent of the protests.

There is nothing more painful than to see or read than the act of blasphemy committed intentionally by some person or a group for their personal grudge or political motives against Islam and the Muslims. The Government plays with fire by supporting the unrest for their own political aims. If the GoP wants to protect the diplomatic enclave they can easily do it by blocking entry roads, but they did choose not to do so for their own aims. Curious how it will go tomorrow. Get a grip people. How many people have already died due to these protests? Even one person is too many. We say we follow Quran and Sunnah and it seems like those are only things people of Pakistan don't follow.
