ISLAMABAD:

History is witness to the fact that writers and poets took an active part in liberation movements across the world. These views were expressed by speakers at a National Literary Seminar on “Literature & Tehreek-e-Pakistan” in connection with Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s death anniversary.

Asif Ghafoor said, “Had literary figures not raised awareness among the people of the sub-continent and inspired them to struggle for their rights, perhaps the British would not have left the region so early.”

He said that Muhammad Iqbal dreamed of an independent country and inspired Muslims through his poetry to fight for their freedom.

Poets and writers convinced people to support the freedom movement through patriotic verses, said Dr Ehsan Akbar.

He added that intellectuals played a significant role in making an independent country.

Prof. Jalil Aali said the Pakistan movement aimed to preserve a separate identity and cultural independence for Muslims.

The event was organised by Pakistan Academy of Letters.
