LAHORE: Javed Mehmood, the former chief secretary (CS), was not repatriated to the federal government at the last moment by the Punjab government, sources told The Express Tribune.

Mehmood’s name had been on the initial list of officers drawn up by the provincial government that it had planned to repatriate to the federal government.

On August 23 the Punjab government repatriated seven DMG officers. They include two BS-21 officers – Farkhanda Wasim Afzal and Major (retired) Tariq Shafi Chak – and five BS-20 officers – Farooq Ahmed Khan, Tariq Feroze, Khalid Hanif, Nasrallah Khan and Hafiz Sher Ali. The officials had been OSDs for quite some time now and were surrendered after the Finance department refused to provide supplementary budget for provision of salaries and other benefits to the officers awaiting posting, some for as long as 28 months.

Javed Mehmood is an officer of the seventh Common and was posted out of turn as Punjab chief secretary. Mehmood had been made an OSD on February 3 after his staff car hit a retired army officer who died as result of the collision.

Mehmood went on leave after being accused of trying to influence the case.

Later, the Punjab government named Mehmood Bank of Punjab chairman. However, Mehmood refused to take charge. In the budget document 2010-11, a new post of chief secretary in BS-22 was created in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat to accommodate Mehmood but was later abolished when the issue was highlighted in the media. According to some Mehmood is still eyeing a second stint as chief secretary.
