Pakistan captain Misbahul Haq has no regrets on the team composition in the final One-Day International (ODI) against Australia, saying the playing-eleven was selected based on their strengths, according to ESPNcricinfo.
Pakistan chose to play four spinners and one fast-bowler in the decider, changing a winning line-up that took part in the second ODI in Abu Dhabi. Batting second, Australia fought back 159 for five in the 36th over to overhaul the 245-run target with 18 balls to spare.
However, Misbah said replacing Sohail Tanvir with Shahid Afridi – who missed the second game due to injury – was not a mistake even though the all-rounder made just seven after being promoted to number three and went wicketless in his 10 overs that cost 62 runs.
“Spinners are our strength,” said Misbah. “Moreover, everyone knows that the Sharjah track is slow and so players struggle against spin, so we went in with only one pacer. I’ve already said that [bringing in Afridi] was because we wanted to strengthen our spin department, and he bowled okay in the first game.
“So, that is why we included him and went in with one fast-bowler. [When batting] we promoted him up the order so that he could get some time to settle in, but unfortunately he could not get runs.”
Pakistan were also let down by poor fielding with dropped catches of David Hussey, culprit being Afridi, and Glenn Maxwell by Azhar Ali.
However, Misbah said, it was not just their fielding that needed improving.
“I think we have to improve in every department of the game, especially with finding the right combination of fast-bowlers — an area in which we are really struggling.
“We have to improve our batting in the Powerplays because if you keep losing wickets, that is only going in favour of the other team.”
The team’s feeling great: Clarke
On the other hand, Australia captain Michael Clarke was a pleased man. While he managed the second-highest tally among runs in the three-match series, much more pleasing would be Australia’s ability to deliver in pressure situations, despite including young players in the team.
“The feeling around the group is a great feeling at the moment, especially after losing 4-0 to England,” said Clarke.
“The guys should be really proud. It was a tough victory against a very good one-day team in Pakistan.
“We worked really hard before coming on this series. We were up in Darwin as a team and worked hard against spin bowling. We found conditions so different to what we tried to prepare for up in Darwin, especially in the heat.
“I’ve never played in the heat and humidity like this. The most pleasing thing is the whole series was won by the whole team, it wasn’t one individual player.”

Get Rid of Akmal Brothers and Misbah on top priority!

Misbah does not even justify his position in team, how can he be made a captain?
After 38 yrs of age and having played 106 ODIs, his best score is 93. Somebody plz ask him is he capabale enough to score a century before retirement.....
Misbah should be retained as captain. He has brought discipline to the team and squashed politics. So i don't agree at all with people who keep asking for him to be removed. I support the PCB in retaining Misbah. On the other hand, I agree with some comments relating to the inclusion of some players. Kamran Akmal showed his compotencies yet again with the gloves and did very little with the bat. Pl consider Sarfaraz or And Adnan Akamal instead. Imran Farhat has not place in the side after the rather impressive performance by the young opener. I would very much like to see Hammad Azam making a return to the national side. He is a talent that can be nurtured into a top rated batsman. I will summarize my critique of the 3rd one day as below: Pros: 1) Top order batting 2) Bowling as always 3) Unity of team was evident for which the captain, coach and senior team members deserve appreciation Cons: 1) basic mistakes by wicket keeper 2) Fielding is still sluggish (Azhar's dropped catch showed laziness and lack of proper technique 3) Killer instinct / aggressive intent was missing, especially when we had the Aussies on the rope. Ajaml should have carried on for 2 more overs 4) Afridi should have been taken off the attack after the injury - his focus seemed diverted 5) Compacency (Omer Akmal's rash shot was a result of this)
Overall, we need to reduce our mistakes and concentrate on basics of cricket. Talent alone can make us an average team however professionalism and match awareness can make us the best side in the world! Captain, coach and all players have to workd towards this objective.
@mehtab. Two bad games and you are on their backs.go on and do some research on their previous performances you will be embarrassed on your lack of knowledge kid.
tuk tuk Misbah.
@waqar: the genuine players of U19 showed even poorer performance on a grand stage and inquiries are being conducted, and you are bringing them to national team.
Players like Misbah and rest should get life time rest and invite new fresh blood. We have got talent waiting in Pakistan.
He is timmid by face, by attitude, by planning, by selection of team and of course when he comes to "tuk tuk............ tuk" . Replacment of him will bring the change otherwise show will be same for sure.
Where was Hammad Aazam? He was just given 2 T20s against England. Why do they keep selecting Akmal brothers and Misbah is beyond any sense
The nation and cricket lovers can only expect some improvements if you kindly step down from one day format. It won't matter if you are allowed to play test series for further one year. Right now even some other senior players who failed to show their worth must also go. We need some fresh blood in all formats of cricket. No politics or favoritism at any cost can only improve the game.
@kashif iqbal. No its not Misbah,he is the most consistent batsman in the lineup and the backbone in the side.please try to understand its the poor selection.we need to oust akmals and afridi and replace them with some jenuine sensible cricket minded players.Pakistan can select some good players from unde 19 team.
And Cricket's improvement is only possible if "you (misbah) leave cricket".
