India's trade deficit with China, a longstanding economic irritant between the emerging market giants, soared 42 percent to nearly $40 billion in the last fiscal year, while total bilateral trade climbed 27 percent to $75 billion.
"We've invited China to participate in and support the establishment of one or more of the National Investment and Manufacturing Zones," trade minister Anand Sharma said in New Delhi after talks with his Chinese counterpart Chen Deming.
"That is where the opportunities beckon," Sharma said in a speech to Indian and Chinese business leaders, adding the response from the Chinese to the investment proposal had been "positive and encouraging".
The zones are being set up under India's National Manufacturing Policy which aims to boost manufacturing as a percentage of gross domestic product to 25 percent from 16 percent in the next decade.
The policy is part of India's struggle to provide jobs to its growing army of young people.
Chen, in turn, said Beijing, which exports mainly capital goods such as heavy engineering equipment to India, recognised its trade relationship with India was lopsided.
"We want to buy more goods from India to grow our trade relationship in a more balanced manner," he said.
"China and India are both fortunate to have sizeable domestic markets which give us the opportunity to offset the risks of the weak global economy," he added.
Both nations' economies have slowed due to the global downturn and in India's case to high interest rates, corruption scandals and government policy paralysis that has dampened business activity.
Deming said China's economy was expected "to grow 7.5 percent or hopefully eight percent this year," down from growth of 9.2 percent last year.
India's once-booming economy grew by just 5.3 percent between January and March, its slowest annual quarterly expansion in nearly a decade.
Diplomatic ties between China and India are prickly due to a festering border dispute and the presence of the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama in India.
But trade has surged with the two countries targeting a goal of $100 billion in bilateral trade by 2015, even though experts say the trade imbalance is unlikely to improve significantly anytime soon.
The two ministers insisted India and China should see each other as commercial partners and agreed to set up a joint working group to look at how to boost trade and investment
"Let us trust each other," the Indian trade minister said, calling on his Chinese counterpart to take back a "positive message of India's commitment to deepen and diversify its partnership with your great country."
"Both countries will grow at a faster pace through this partnership."

When will India ask LeT to invest in India; Hafiz Saeed can start humanitarian activities for the poor, downtrodden untouchable caste.
The supply chain network of India and China, international trade between China and Pakistan can possibly benefit with their presence in India. With the transit routes of Pakistan to China, Central Asian States, the accessibility of ATA Carnet in Pakistan etc., it would be worth a while for a round table between the three Governments to make an assessment.
In the long run trade is far more powerful than Nukes - better for the taxpayers as well.
@Prabhat Pal: You may be right, however this is not going to be another Africa for Chinese either. India needs to build its Industrial bases as most of what is done in India is largely service sector based and its very easy to pull plug on that, while with Industrial base it brings infrastructure, plant & machinery too, so its rather difficult to move or shut down. I don't agree with you in regards to India's trained workforce, it already is in place in majority of states and the education system will adopt to the needs also.
Manufacturing jobs won't come to India as much as the software jobs did. Our universities and technical colleges are neither well equipped nor have good faculty and MOUs with industry. Even if Chinese companies come to India to invest in manufacturing industry, they won't find trained people fit for the job. Language will be another big problem. For example, in coal mining in India, they come with their full team and machinery, do the job with their workers, take the money and leave.
Honorable Minister Mr. Anand Sharma I'm honored to have met yourselves alongwith Indian delegation at the Karachi Sheraton with a spiritual opening for opening trade with Pakistan. Excellency Pakistan and China are trade partners with an FTA/PTA between the two countries. Arrangements can possibly be worked out after discussion between our Governments for enhancing the role of Indian manufacturing sector value addition etc., and using the transit route and the Economic Zones of Pakistan for enhancing trade with China.
Please invite Jamat Ud Dawa.. and see how they will invest.
Indian Origin Canadian stand-up comedian Russell Peters joked in a show about Indian and Chinese doing business together: Indians and Chinese can never do business together. Indians always want a bargain and Chinese never give a bargain.
Good luck to both India and China! . Every country watches her interest and so should Pakistan. Nothing wrong with that!

Yes ! This economic relationship has lot of prospects and future too, however its also another nail in Pakistan's coffin of special relationship, as these guys are well are of India's pontential and economic progress, while they also see what Pakistan has been up in recent times, and no doubt that when it comes to this issue Pakistan is simply not in same league !
This is the soft power of India. We want to work with all and we believe in it.In terms of competition let the best companies win. Way to go India..
