Armstrong underwent a heart-bypass surgery earlier this month, just two days after his birthday on Aug. 5, to relieve blocked coronary arteries.
As commander of the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. As he stepped on the moon's dusty surface, Armstrong said: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
The Apollo 11 moon mission turned out to be Armstrong's last space flight. The following year he was appointed to a desk job, being named Nasa's deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the office of advanced research and technology.
He left NASA a year later to become a professor of engineering at the University of Cincinnati.
The former astronaut lived in the Cincinnati area with his wife, Carol.

plz guy's dont fight..hero is gone...lets pray for him....all the religons are telling same thing
why are you using a picture of Buzz Aldrin? its Neil Armstrong who has died
May Allah help us all to have the courage, decency and focus of our brother Neil Armstrong.
@Asad Shairani: but Pakistan is a a Islamic Power house
All, Mohd Chaudry was obviously being sarcastic. I remember my Islamiat teacher telling me this ridiculous story in the late 80s, she believed it was true. My question to her - forget about space, why dont we on Earth hear a global azaan? That would pretty much put an end to any questions on religion. But of course, logic and religion don't go together!
Dear Readers, Greetings to you all. Yes indeed Niel Armstrong did not have Islamic faith. What he would have benefited by converting to Islam. There are plenty of Muslims IN the world converting to Islam .So stupid folks donot spread wrong information that Sunita accepted Islam or Amitab Bachan went to Mosque. Islam is Islam stand truthfully occupying an honourable place as our Holy Prophet Mohammed MSAS. Thank You.
@Blendi: wel done for wishing peace upon him - and NOT maybe he was defientley not Muslim
@Muhammad Chaudhry: you are funny! - Armstrong was not a muslim! , BUT guess what , Dr Abdus Salaam was! (everything seems to be upside down in the land of the pure)
@Salman:
No, he identified himself as a deist (someone who believes in God but doesn't follow a particular religion).
RIP NA @Muhammad Chaudhry: Do not bring religion into everything. People like you bring bad name to Islam
Maybe that's what THEY want you to believe .......
@Muhammad Chaudhry: sound on moon? pathetic !!
@Farzan: One small step for "A" Man, One giant leap for Mankind.
@Muhammad Chaudhry:
what? please stop nonsense. lol
It would be a nicer tribute to Neil Armstrong if the photo accompanying the article was actually one of Neil. That shot is of Buzz Aldrin. http://apple.copydesk.org/2012/08/25/keep-in-mind-as-you-put-together-your-neil-armstrong-packages-tonight/
@Muhammad Chaudhry: " ... I am very shocked to hear the news. He was the greatest covert to Islam from the USA. He heard the call to Athan on the Moon and he converted ... "
Alexander The Great also converted to Islam.
Rest in Peace Neil Armstrong. You were an asset to humankind. Salams
@Muhammad Chaudhry: boy,if one needs to hear anything,first we need an existence of a median over there.sound cannot propagate or travel in empty space.And moon has no atmosphere,it is surrounded by vacuum,,how can he hear anything on moon, when there is no medium through which sound can travel. i read many foolish stories of this nature on many websites,the most hilarious was when a Lebanese claimed that neil armstrong had permanently shifted to Lebanon after converting,an Egyptian said the same thing,but he wrote that he had settled in Egypt. no wonder why the Europeans and Americans are leading the world in science technology and others still stuck in medieval times.
Guys cool down. The guy is dead and it is now between him and God to decide if he was a Muslim or an Atheist. Personally I hope that his soul was as strong as his Arm.
I think he was saying it sarcastically about Neil converting to Islam
Here is an online memorial to Neil Armstrong - please feel free to light a virtual candle or send virtual flowers - http://www.memorialmatters.com/memorials.php?page=NeilArmstrong
That is a picture of Buzz Aldrin :) Neil can be seen in the visor.
@Muhammad Chaudhry: He never converted to islam. Its sll lies spread my mullahs just like mullahs in Iran claim Eindtein converted to Islam secretly.
R.I.P moon man
@Muhammad Chaudhry: its amazing how people like you can make up stories and have plenty of people agree with you,im just amazed...and bytheway hearing azaan on the moooonnnn......you dont say...
@Muhammad Chaudhry: Check your source of information. It is a rumor falsely spread by muslims, may be from Pakistan who claim he converted to Islam in Malaysia when he was 75 year old. In any case, Islam that was once considered a good religion now stands greatly defamed. Thanks to muslims extremists of Pakistan.
@Muhammad Chaudhry: And here is your sign.
It is Pakistan's tragedy that the most recommendations are for a comment that is a proven fabrication. The country and so many of its citizens are so dominated with religious zeal that they have little interest in verifying facts or celebrating science and its achievements for its own sake. For them everything is about religion and they will take false pride in someone else's achievements (which have nothing to do with his religion) on the basis of religion instead of celebrating the achievements of hard work and human ingenuity. RIP Neil Armstrong! You were a hard working and exceptional astronaut who was always humble about his achievements.
I still don't understand the need of many Pakistani Muslims who need to create or pander to sensationalist stories in regards to Islam to reaffirm their faith. No, Neil Armstrong did not hear the azaan on the moon and he did not convert to Islam, get over it. His death is not an opportunity for you to repeat and perpetuate tales that have no basis in truth. Your faith and beliefs do not need fables to keep you going...if you think you do, you have some problems
R.I.P. Now go for the moon in heaven. Armstrong made history for mankind.
@Ibrahim:
Those who believe in the theory/story,I wonder if they ever read that sounds require a medium to travel in their Physics textbooks, and its' not possible to happen in space. Our people believe Urban legends,myths and rumours so easily. And then their ignorance helps us and Muslims in receiving mockery and embarassment everywhere. Quite lately morphed pictures relating to violence in Myanmar had put entire Pakistani nation in deep quagmire once again.
@Muhammad Chaudhry It is because of fools like you that we will never send a man to the moon.
@Muhammad Chaudhry: No brother that is a rumour started by mullahs and like most typical Pakistanis you have accepted what the mullah has told you without questioning it, I really wish Pakistanis can one day become educated enough to research information for themselves rather then blindly following the mullah
Please leave the religion aside and let's celeberate achievments of a great life.
You can't hear sound in space (Vacuum???). If only everyone went a learnt something from school.
One giant loss for mankind. Landing on the moon is still one of the biggest achievement of the human race.
@Muhammad Chaudhry: Not sure if kidding... You probably are, but still I'd like to address his 'conversion' as it's quite popular. He never heard any 'azan' in space, in fact you cannot hear anything in space except through communications equipment. He has on more than one occasion denied the rumors of his conversion.
A quote from Armstrong's biography: "I have found that many organizations claim me as a member, for which I am not a member, and a lot of different families — Armstrong families and others — make connections, many of which don’t exist. So many people identify with the success of Apollo. The claim about my becoming a Muslim is just an extreme version of people inevitably telling me they know somebody whom I might know."
There is no evidence whatsoever to support the claim that Neil Armstrong converted to Islam, or that he and the other Apollo 11 crew members witnessed anything miraculous while on the moon. Conversely, there is copious amounts of evidence that directly or indirectly prove the entire claim to be a hoax. The evidence against this claim is so strong that there has even been a fatwa issued confirming it as fabricated. Armstrong himself, in his autobiography, denied ever converting to Islam. His administrative aide and the US State Department also denied any truth behind the conversion rumors. He would later, in Malaysia, explicitly deny that there was any truth behind the claim that he also heard the Muslim call to prayer on the moon, and the transcript and audio of the moon landing itself contradict the claim that "strange" sounds or words were ever heard.
@Muhammad Chaudhry He never converted, its just a story.
@Muhammad Chaudhry Its a hoax...
RIP Neil!
RIP Neil.
I am very shocked to hear the news. He was the greatest covert to Islam from the USA. He heard the call to Athan on the Moon and he converted
After an achievement as huge as his, he came back to be a professor. Wow. No secret why the US is the power it is.
Rest in peace.
One small step for Man, One giant leap for Mankind. RIP Neil.
