Officers said Yousaf Khan, 32, was kidnapped by seven members of a landowning family who gouged his eyes out with a knife before cutting off his ears, nose, lips and tongue.
The bloody incident took place in Mirzapur village in Okara district, around 120 kilometres east of Lahore.
"Yousaf Khan was blamed for an illicit relationship with a woman. We have arrested five culprits," Khaliq Riaz, a police officer involved in the investigation, told AFP by telephone.
Riaz said he hoped a man and a woman, also involved in the grisly incident would soon be arrested.
"The family said they had several times warned Yousaf over the illicit relations and they were forced to take this extreme step to punish the barber," Riaz said.
Sanaullah, an officer in the district police chief's office who goes by only one name, confirmed the incident and arrests.
Khan was later taken to a local hospital where doctors were battling to save his life, police said.

@Abid P Khan: You are confused, your comment doesn't make sense.
"@Sheesha: This country and society is going to go down prettyyy soon !!!!" . @Sheesha: something tells me that we are already there. .
@maryam: and they play God again ………………………….sick people!!!! . I had a more benign image of God
and they play God again ...............................sick people!!!!
This country and society is going to go down prettyyy soon !!!!
Why would a married woman try to make "illicit" relationship with a man other than her husband? I think everybody knows the answer. The husband must have killed himself first. Secondly, why would the frustrated relatives of the woman couldn't control or punish the woman, instead of brutalizing the poor man in jealousy? I wish I could know the answer.
@Ashraf: This kind of stupidity should stop. Where have you read about such inhumane acts happening in the USA or anyother Western nation? Do not write something because you believe Islam to be a peace loving religion inspite of contrary evidence.
@Ashraf:
"I strongly condemn this act which is against the Humanity and Islam teachings."
I agree these are against the idea of humanity. However, though gouging eyes, tongue and lips for adultery is not part of Islamic teachings, Islam does prescribe stoning to death for adultery, cutting off hand for theft and death penalty for apostasy and blasphemy, many death penalties to be carried out by beheading. Beheading is still practiced today in Saudi Arabia.
The only reason why our country is going down the drain is because we want to do things our way and forget what Allah has commanded. Kudos to the so called muslims and their ways! And why them I am sure I am no better! May Allah have mercy on all of us and guide us to the right path... :(
@Reza Mujtaba:
"@Abid P Khan: what is your point actually?" . We seem to rely upon different sets of rules which suits. For example, when abroad you follow the rules of that country, traffic or taxes. Now, some persons are being asked to bring back their assets possessed abroad, back home whatever means they may have used to accumulate that much. . Extramarital affairs which are strictly frowned upon (not just by Maya Khan), should they be judged according to Sharia in a Pakistan court? (There is a parallel with Julian Assange's Case). . What happens to the offspring of such cases (Taseer's first son, and other similar children, the fathers avoided to accept their responsibility). . The barber from Okara cannot afford a lawyer unless public financial support can be provided. . Should there be a law for the poor?
@Abid P Khan: Are you commenting on the above piece (Barber in Okara) ?
Totally agree with YA.......
Its really strange that such incidnts happen in every part of the world even worse crimes, but they are never reported in this manner in the international or even their local media , all the countries are busy potraying a happy and positive image of their country but our media reports only a Handful of negative news , creating a horrific image of the country even to the overseas pakistanis, but while living in Pakistan is totally different to the pakistan seen in the media , millions of Pakistanis are living normal lives and are also very happy in Pakistan, please stop the negative and depressing news and focus on the many many positive aspects, whereas many different faiths are living in peace and even helping each other.you cant blame the world if they call us terrorists if this is all what they hear from our media.
It always amazes me to read comments which typical go: " this is not Islam" or "this is against the teaching of Islam" or "if we practiced true Islam this would never happen" or "these people cannot be Muslims". It seems there is a dire religious insecurity in our country, The fact is Islam is what it is and Muslims are who they are, positive or negative affirmations are irrelevant and meaningless.
This is horrific incidence and the growing level of violence and intolerance is a fact of every day life in our country. History has shown us time and time again the disastrous end to such societies, another lesson that history teaches us is that we rarely learn from history.
So if we cannot change the facts on the ground, the least we can do, is to be responsible and honest observers, so that we may tell the future generation how we destroyed ourselves or how we were able to avert disaster. So we don't send our youngsters in the world blind sighted, then its in their hand to make whatever they may of it.........
In the end I would say this SHAME ON US, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US!!!!!
Leave islam alone. These are symptoms of regressive tribal society that refusing to move with time. What we need is education and education and an education free from any prejudices. and also of course a strong legal-police - judiciary system.
@Haris Chaudhry: A few cases of violence within the uneducated rural folk cannot be considered as the true reflection of our society of 180 million people. Our religion, very strictly prohibits violence but there are always people who have little or no knowledge of religion. By the way, you name any society in which you do not have violence. US , the so called most civilized society in the world, is no different from other countries of the world. Occasionally one keeps reading in the newspapers about shooting incidents, rapes and sexual harassment in US but we do not care to raise a pointing finger. May be we have some kind of inferiority complex about ourselves. As long as we have human beings living on the planet earth, we cannot totally eliminate violence and crime from the society. However as a responsible Muslim society we must condemn such incidents. Educate our masses to be law abiding and make sure that the perpetrators are always brought to justice. As long as those who have committed the crime are suitably punished we should have no worry.
This is horrible! Not the extra marital affair which is bad enough but the mutilation that happened afterwards. Hope that the Supreme Court is taking notice!
@a&a: Where is the real Islam? Can you tell me any place on the face of the earth?
Thank God, I left Pakistan and the craziness years ago!
strong textI really don't know what to say......these ppl are savages, in a way I think it might be better if this poor man dies......absolutely dreadful.
I am horrified to read this. I hope the authorities bring the death sentence to these culprrits. But knowing Pakistan I have no faith this poor man will receive justice in this life. His life is finished with no eyes, earss, nose, and I hope allah swt takes him in peace and grants retribution against the culprits. Pakistan crimes is horror after horror.
@haris choudhry with due respect my friend our society is filled with ppl like us if we want to change the society we have to change ourselves and yes its not gonna happen overnight but every journey begins with a single step
If you read the articles in the Tribune for the last two weeks it's hard not to come to the conclusion that the World should erect a big wall around Pakistan to confine the madness.
O M G!! This must b not the very first or the alone barbaric incident on earth but the issue is that it is been done in the ramzan on the land of islam....Why are molvies not attentive to make society more literate for islam and humanity?????
@Kaleem: Pakistan is its people. Land does not make up a nation or country; its the citizens who make up a nation. You cannot separate the People from the Country. Unfortunately a large majority of people in Pakistan are barbarians and extremists and the sooner we realized that the sooner we can start making a positive change.
@Rai asif khan: What kind of sick comment have you made! Not only it underlines the justification for the unfortunate and barbaric fate meted out to the poor victim, but you are also calling for the same for the woman. This is horrific, and must not be allowed in a civilized society. Please don't spread your diseased and twisted logic.
lol no economic, political makes headline in this newspaper. only random horror stories does. wonder if there is any such newspaper in any other country of the world!
Gouged victim eyes , cut his ears, tongue & lips ... should have killed the guy instead.
This should serve as a painful and a horrifying reminder of the retribution that will subsequently follow for any illicit sexual relationship; it should also spell the need for controlling the base desires that so often motivates people for self-gratification. The message is perfectly and painfully simple and to the point: Don't be a 'luchak' or 'laufer' in Pakistan, like they do in the West, it will NOT be TOLERATED.
This is what happens when govt, law enforcement and courts don't do their job. Govt is owned by these land lords, law enforcement is either scared and also owned by powerfuls and terrorists, courts are lazy in addition to all of the above.
If the criminals are not punished severely, there would be more copycat incidents. Punjab police and law department should make this as their test case, with zero tolerance. Justice should be swift and without mercy. Any leniency and delay would push the society further into darkness. Let's bring some order into this chaotic crowd (we don't qualify to be called a nation).
This is yet another example of the hypocritical nature of our society. If the barber was really involved as is alleged with the married woman, then both of them should have been given the same punishment as it would have been an excellent example for those indulging in illicit relationships
@a&a: What about amputation, flogging, beheading, stoning, crucifixion? Might these be a source of our barbarism?
had he been a Christian then other color to the story would had been attached and the coverage wud had gone as far as CNN
@a&a: even the ones which know Islam does not come upfront and say anything against brutal actions like this...so this is a joke!!
We are so quick to take laws in our hands. To cut down on these extreme crimes these criminals should be severely punished and quickly
This is Pakistan ! Landlords rule !!
How terribly barbaric.
society that is so base in behaviour can never progress. Illiteracy, arrogance and murderous attitudes will do pakistan in.
Was the victim alone involved in this 'illicit' relationship? Don't they need the two for having a relationship? If the perpetrators have asked their relative woman any question about the relationship? It is strongly believed that those doing this heinous crime must not be some angel like creatures. They may also have their own underhand relationships with someone else' relative women. Why peoples' GHAIRAT is triggered once their own woman is involved in the act?
@Haris Chaudhry: "Contradiction in our words and actions are extreme...." . Islamic laws are to be followed by Muslims, irrespective of their geographical location, be it Adis Abeba or The Arctic region.. . Many, while abroad, avail the opportunity to have ample sexual involvements. Some live in a temporary relationships/dates, end up even producing so called "illicit" children. Are such acts acceptable to the Pakistani society, when the said persons are still living away or exempted when they return to their home land? . Are rules applicable only on the non-resourceful?
Good God!
Arrest these landlords .
shame on us!!!
I strongly condemn this act which is against the Humanity and Islam teachings. But do not make it "JHOMER" to Pakistan because more violent acts are practiced in USA and many other countries..but we dont even hear about those and if something happens in Pakistan and then the whole world listen and propagate that.
Targets must be wrong acts irrespective of the boundaries, religion or any discrimination..
My god ! i am so terrified to read it . We have no morality left . Are we humans ?
@Haris Chaudhry: These illiterate & unguided people don't know anything about the Real Islam . . .!!!! Please don't consider it a JOKE
The horror.
If there was a prize for the "most inhumane society", I would imagine it would be won by Pakistan each year !! Contradiction in our words and actions are extreme.. We are one of the most violent societies yet want world to believe that our religion and our nation is in fact a peace loving nation and people..
What a joke !
