Police refuse to register rape case against SHO: NGO

KARACHI: A rape case, in which a woman was illegally detained on August 2 at the Sharae Noor Jahan police station by SHO Ameer Muhammad Lashari, is yet another in the series of arbitrary detentions reported against law enforcement agencies, it was stated in a press release issued by the War Against Rape (WAR) on Monday.

Despite court orders, the police refused to register a rape case against the SHO due to pressure allegedly from the “higher police officials”, stated WAR director Sarah Zaman.

In a statement recorded by duty officer SI Javed, the survivor claimed that she was on her way home with her husband and two-year-old son when SHO Ameer Muhammad Lashari stopped their motorcycle and searched her husband.

After seizing Rs86,000 from her husband, SHO Lashari allegedly took the family to the Sharae Noor Jahan police station, where the family was detained.

No charges were filed against the family, said the survivor, who added that SHO Lashari later raped her. The next morning, the SHO allegedly ordered her to fetch more money if she wanted her husband to be set free. He also threatened to kill her husband if the survivor was to disclose details of the incident to anyone.

A police official from the same station later accompanied the survivor to her house, took Rs7,000 and a television set and handed them over to the SHO.

Lashari allegedly refused to release the husband and demanded an additional Rs50,000 for doing so.

Despite court orders issued by additional district and sessions judge central Muhammad Azeem for the registration of an FIR against SHO Lashari, the survivor’s attempts been explicitly denied, it was stated.

Legal action must be taken against the people responsible for the crime and the survivor must be allowed to register her complaint without fear or pressure, the statement concluded.
