KARACHI:
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) has accused the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) of slashing Karachi’s water quota by 15 million gallons per day (mgd), leading to shortages in Orangi, Baldia, SITE, Pak Colony and Mauripur.
Wapda has been continuously reducing water supply from the Hub Dam reservoir for the past two years despite protests by the KWSB, said the water authority’s spokesman on Monday. The supply has been cut “unilaterally” even as the city is facing a severe water shortage already, he added.
Karachi’s total water requirement stands at over 1,100 mgd, whereas the city is receiving around 435 mgd only.
The Wapda officials at Hub Dam insist that they have not reduced the supply and instead someone was stealing the water. “There is no possible way to steal 15 million gallons of water in one night. There are no known machines which can do that,” said the KWSB spokesman. KWSB Managing Director Misbahuddin Farid has requested Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad, Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and the Sindh assembly members to look into the matter.
