HARIPUR:
A ‘medical practitioner’ and her colleague were arrested on Monday after a pregnant woman allegedly died during childbirth at their clinic in Ghazi Tehsil.
According to the police, Zakia Begum and Manzoor were arrested after Gul Sanam Shah of Khalo village lodged a case against them.
Shah had alleged that Begum was running a private clinic even though she was neither a doctor nor a gynaecologist.
According to Shah, Hasnat Bibi, 20, was taken to Begum’s clinic after entering labour. She underwent a Caesarean section and gave birth to a healthy baby, the police said, while adding that excessive blood loss was believed to be the cause of the mother’s death.
Acting on the complaint, a police team headed by ASP Wahid Mahmood raided the clinic and arrested the suspects for involuntary manslaughter.
Begum was sent to jail, while Manzoor was turned over to the police on physical remand.
Last week, Begum was booked after one of her patients, a mother-of-six, underwent an operation at her clinic and later died of excessive blood loss at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad. Begum had been released on bail after the earlier incident.
