No casualties were reported in the incident, however, the participants of the procession started protesting and pelted stones at police and Rangers. The police resorted to aerial firing to disperse the protesters.
The clash between the protesters and police officials continued for a long time.
Commissioner Karachi Roshan Ali Shaikh said that the clashes had erupted when some suspicious people tried to enter the procession, however, the situation was taken in control by the police.
Youm-i-Ali being observed
The martyrdom anniversary of Hazrat Ali (RA), also known as Youm-i-Ali, was observed across the country on Friday with religious processions being taken out amid strict security arrangements.
In Lahore, the procession began from Mubarak Haveli, which after passing through several places, will end at Karbala Gamay Shah in the evening.
The procession in Hyderabad emerged from Imam Bargah Dadan Shah and will end at Qadamgah Mola Ali at around Maghrib. Similar processions are also being taken out in Karachi and Rawalpindi.
All police holidays were suspended and the cities were put on red alert to ensure security during the processions.
DSPs and SHOs in all areas were ordered to patrol their areas and carry out snap-checking and surprise-checking during the day.

@Jani: It is Wahabis who create law and order situation by attacking Shia processions. Shia marches are here till eternity, whether you like it or not. Shia religion never accepted intimidation, your hate mongering will not work here.
@Ibrahim: In short, yes, Shia Muslims do favour Ali over the 3 earlier caliphs as being the true rightful successor to Rasool (SAW). Guess its the same thinking that Muslims are closer to the 'truth' as compared to non-Muslims, of which the majority of the global population is. Quality, not quantity. A majority can indeed hold inaccurate views, as compared to a minority. But, yes, neutral or non-Muslim academics have usually portrayed a narrative closer to Shia claims. I may agree with you on 'zanjeer', but the 'matam' is quite benign and has Islamic precedent, despite whatever paranoid and biased beliefs you hold. The 4 'rightly guided' caliphs narrative is believed by Sunni Muslims, not all Muslims, including Shia Muslims. There is no 'innovation' (the smearing Wahhabi 'bidat' accusation), many of the contentions are supported in Sunni sources. If such facts are difficult to swallow, please, at least try to deal with it in a tolerant fashion.
@Jani: Even restricted to Imambargahs, Shia Muslims have been attacked. Not surprising you excuse the 'chaos' or 'power' by Wahhabi/Salafi/Deoband/Sunni extremist militants who are proven to be driving violent sectarianism and terrorism. The intention of a Juloos is not to 'create chaos' or 'show power' as you prejudicially put it, as these are specific religious days in the year that such processions are taken out to commemorate religious events, not a 365 days affair. Shia Pakistani citizens have their rights to gather and march peacefully despite such bigoted discriminatory Wahhabi hate and suggestions of expulsions.
@Jani..
Meri jaan! you also find a way to move to Saudi Arabia instead of telling the peaceful participants of processions for moving to Iran. Seriously think about it.
@all the people who condem the Jaloos on streets
Y u guyz dont shout when some political party call for city strike and all you people shut your mouth and don't say a word because of fear. ??

@Ibrahim: Read yr own authentic books you ll get the answer
Ah religion. Thank you for all this.
There is no need for Shias to convince anyone about azadari. This is a ritual that has been carried on for centuries by Muslims across the sectarian divide, nay even non-Muslims who have love for the Holy prophet (sawas) and members of his Holy household (alaehmussalam). Those who find it appropriate not to practice azadari have never been forced to do it. Those who wish to do azadari of persons other than the Ahlebait (a.s) are most welcome to initiate it.
Shutting of shops or blocking of roads is not a requirement of azadari. It is a result of the free rein given by the state to anti-Shia terrorists for many decades. Now the chickens are coming home to roost.
Tyrants like the Umayyads and Abbasides could not stop azadari despite all their tyranny. Nor will today's followers and admirers of these tyrants.
"Those to whom the people said: Surely men have gathered against you, therefore fear them, but this increased their faith, and they said: Allah is sufficient for us and most excellent is the Protector" (Qura'an 3:173)
@Noise SHG
First of all I dont follow Mullas and secondly I am not cut of anything and Noise you trying to say that Hazrat Ali R.A has a higher degree than Hazrat Abu Bakr Hazrat Usman Hazrat Umar R.A??
or you trying to say that a small group of people knows about Islamic History much more than the rest of Ummah.
Self torturing is not only against religion but also against Humanity so please stop all this and dont portray Islam as a religion where one has to torture itself in mourning.
All Muslim nation feels sad for what happened to the 4 Caliphs of Islam so please stop innovating things by giving references frm the self written hostory.
May Allah guide you to the right path of one Quran and sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
@Ibrahim:
I'd be glad if my Sunni brother outright condemned violence, instead of justifying it based on their own religious prejudices against azadari.
You're saying if we give importance to Umar, Usman and Abu Bakr, all these practices will then be magically justified by you and become 'Islam'? Or at least your kind of Islam and interpretation?
Sorry but they're divine personalities put on a pedestal by those who practice Sunni Islam, not Shia Islam. Basically to ease your resentment, of mentioning only Ali and Hussain, and make yourself comfortable and supreme, you want Shias to become Sunnis. Simply put, Shia Muslims don't subscribe to a 'kumbayah' revisionist history and note the Islamic historical controversies and hypocrisies seriously.
@Shahbaz: "Ban all these procession whether its done by sunnis, shias or whatever. "
Ah! But sunnis do nto have a religious procession do they? SO in effect you are simply asking Shia processions to be back.
By the way what are your views about DPC processions and Imran Khan's procession to Waziristan? Ban those also?
@Kazim: talking abt businesses being shut for jaloos. Have a look at kamran khan report on how much these majlis and procession injuct in pak economy. Every sector is benefited.
Everyone is talking about everything, including prejudiced enforcement against the targeted minority, except condemning the terrorist perpetrators who shot at the procession.
Yes, there should be better road management. Can empathize with shopkeepers and this needs addressing or compensating. It doesn't, however, justify murder and massacres. Such insane hate will not likely disappear by a mere ban by biased hegemonic enforcement, as attacks have happened on Shias at processions AND at their homes, work, travel, masjids or imambargahs, etc, so this isn't an end all solution. Its incredibly safer and freer in the West.
There's rising anti-Shia bigotry and Wahhabi/Salafi/Deoband/Sunni extremist myopic beliefs among a growing segment in the Sunni majority, as seen in comments here, that is part of the larger ideological crisis of violent sectarian extremism and terrorism in Pak, that needs to be countered.
@Ibrahim This is tradition preached by the family of Muhammad (pbuh), from the Imams from the Ahl-e-Bayt, But you wouldn't know this because you are totally cut off from the family of your own prophet (pbuh) and care nothing of what they taught and of the injustice they were subjected too. Instead you only care about people who dont really matter, believe an imaginary history where everything was happy happy and joy joy between the sahaba, when truth is the reality was very different.
We are loyal to Muhammad (pbuh) and loyal to his heirs and we are sad in their sadness and happiness. We dont say "they are ours" we say "we are theirs".
I am unable to understand why in time of no peace, our Shia brothers are coming out. Hazrat Ali and all other are very dear to us but this doesn't mean that we should come out knowing that we are in danger.
Respect is in heart...If there is no way to stop then please go ahead and also think about hundreds of Muslims being killed daily all around the world and our Balochi brothers.
Mourning the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali is fine but it becomes absurd to rally for it. It was centuries ago but killing of hundreds are being done presently. Why not mourn those?
Peace OUT!
@Ibrahim: LOL... go study books dear... Khalee Mullas ke Jumma Khutboo see inspire ho ka islam ka nae pata chalta... go study books then u will come to know WHO is WHO and WHAT is WHAT... May Almighty Allah guide you
@Pak1 This is not the way to talk. pls talk politely. This just creates hate an anger.
@Ibrahim
It does not matter what your definition of Islam is. What matters is there is a part of our society who want to practice their religion this way. And we all should respect that. Its their constitutional right. For yourself, you can talk to scholars and red books. But pls dont spread your dislike / disapporoval of other people's non-violent religious practices on a public place like this.
@Kazim: enough posted about your less knowledge. I dont want to humiliate u further on your knowledge... Just go for study and better ask your parents as well.
Religious processions like these are themselves a sign of religions fundamentalism and should be banned. Its just that you have others who are even more fundamentalist in their beliefs that they kill people, but its all the same idea.
Ban all of them and stop complaining when one group outdoes you in their religious zealotry.
@ Kazim You never knew what Youm e Ali is because your parents didn't bothered it to let you know, or rather they themselves were ignorant. Atleast one in thousand people like you might go to their house and read the books of history and try to dig out the facts that relates to this great personality and try to follow his teachings as instructed by Allah and his Prophet (P.B.U.H).
I will be glad if any of my shia brother could give me the justification of so called azaadari wrt Sahi Ahadith and Quran...
Sorry but I dont call it Islam and yes it can be some other religion but not Islam where you give special importance to everything related to Hazrat Hussain and Hazrat Ali what about Hazrat Umar, Usman, Abu Bakr?
Are you agents of wahabis as well-you tolerate criticism of Shias but dont print comments against perperators of injustices-this is your freedom of speech in Pakistan -
@Kazim "We never knew of this Youm -e- Ali juloos previously"? Really? where do you live? In Karachi?
"Plus, once they get on streets, everything from traffic to business is blocked and shut down, which is pathetic and creates hatred for shia community among shop keepers and office going masses."
This is really offensive. I never mind a juloos (may be 3 or 4 days in a year!) and neither do any of my friends who belong to various sects and religions. You probably want to say something else whose manifestation came out like this?
@Shahbaz
Thats exactly what these elements want. They want no sect / section of our society to have/show street power in any form. Thats precisely why we should not ban any processions. Besides, if you find a short term solution by banning things on street, what is the guarantee they would nt next attack the ceremonies/gatherings inside mosques, etc. For your information, the majority of the bomb blasts have been in enclosed spaces. And i have a question for you: if, God forbid, a blast occures in Khana e Kaba during Hajj, would you then go on to propose banning hajj as well? Or the new year night at Sea View? Its a matter of principle and a matter of finding the right solutions. Not a matter of confining religious minorities in the name of protecting them.
In my opinion, shias of Pakistan should spend more time in their houses rather than on streets. We never knew of this Youm -e- Ali juloos previously, and they have invented it recently. Plus, once they get on streets, everything from traffic to business is blocked and shut down, which is pathetic and creates hatred for shia community among shop keepers and office going masses.
interfaith harmony ???
These religion fanatics are doing everything that goes against the teaching of Islam and Holy Prophet (pbuh&p). Who is making them commit these crimes? that is the question that everyone should ask.
@shahbaz : and last but not the least ban you from ET better from all forums
@Shahbaz: By putting a ban on religious freedom you are doing exactly what these terrorists want. The fanatic terrorists do not want any shrines, any mujlis, milad or even Quran khawani for anybody. We should not be so nice as to support their agenda and give up all our religious freedom and traditions. I do agree that most mosques should be taken over and run by the govt appointed trusts and free from radicals. Thanks and regards, Mirza
Ban Mr. Shahbaz from posting dictatorial posts
Ban all these procession whether its done by sunnis, shias or whatever. Furthermore, ban any/all mosques which belong to any particular sect like deobandhi, brailvi, ahle hadith etc.
Special Prayers for the safety of all Momineen who will set out of their homes today for Azadaari and Juloos e Aza of Hazrat Ali (AS). May Allah protect all azaadars all around the World. Ameen.
