An early visit to Israel is part of this routine, which explains why the Republican Party’s presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, travelled to Israel last week. However, the trip was also meant to showcase his understanding of foreign policy issues, but it got off on a wrong footing, with a faux pas in London caused by his gratuitous remark about the British. This exposed Romney’s inability to appreciate the nuances influencing relations with foreign countries.
In Jerusalem, Romney sought to repair the damage, but instead went overboard; not only offering his hosts a carte blanche should they decide to attack Iran but also ridiculing the Palestinians. His remarks caused quite a stir, though they were in tune with the sentiments of his supporters, such as the casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson, who had organised the trip and expressed readiness to give as much as $100 million for Romney’s campaign. It, nevertheless, raised questions about the nominee’s intelligence, acumen and political maturity.
Moreover, in claiming that Israel’s accomplishments were on account of “culture and a few other things” including, of course, “the hand of providence”, Romney exposed his racist tendencies. Though Palestinian criticism was of little consequence to Romney, his remarks did invite negative comments from other countries, including China, as well as from mainstream US political and social commentators. In fact, even his claim that he came to this view from his reading of Jared Diamond’s best-seller Guns, Germs and Steel was dismissed by the author himself, who denied having propounded such a theory. To further buttress his intellectual credentials, Romney referred to David Land’s book The Wealth and Poverty of Nations, to assert that culture is the defining factor in determining the success of a society. But this view has always been controversial.
While applauding Israel’s high GDP per capita and denigrating Palestine’s poor economic performance, the presidential aspirant appeared not to know that Palestine has been occupied by Israel for the past many decades, during which, much of its economy and infrastructure has been destroyed and the territory made its captive market. He also ignored the fact that Israel has been the largest annual recipient of American assistance for the past many decades. And, of course, Romney would not have had time to read the World Bank’s just-issued report, which affirms that Palestine’s crippled economy is primarily on account of Israel’s five-year blockade.
Romney’s reference to “providence” aiding Israel’s achievements was equally purposeful. He was obviously trying to appeal to the powerful evangelical Christian groups (who have their own misgivings about him), whose core belief is that the creation of Israel and the gathering of all Jews there, has a divine purpose — to create conditions for the second coming of Christ.
Romney’s ‘antics’ may surprise and disappoint many, but it arises from the increasing role of money in US elections, especially of those such as Adelson, who can write mega cheques to ‘super PACS’ (Publics Accounts Committee) and the fact that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the powerful Israeli lobby alone can vouch for the credentials of the candidates. This has made virtually all lawmakers fearful of offending Israel. American national politics is littered with the destroyed careers of giants such as Senator Charles Percy, who were defeated because they were perceived as not ‘loyal enough’ to Israel. And President Jimmy Carter’s own defeat is ascribed by some to his espousal of a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue, even though he may have done more than any US president to ensure Israel’s security by facilitating a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt. With people such as Romney occupying centre stage in US politics, peace between Israel and the Palestinians will remain a distant dream.

I think Mitt Romney will be worst than George W. Bush as a president!!!
American Jewish lobby has got money. And politics is an expensive business these days. So what would be the other approach rather than gaining support of your fundraisers by making such controversial statements, no matter how much ludicrous they may sound. It is the serving the purpose best of Mr. Romney i.e gaining sympathies of those sections and ultimately election win.
That's an easy answer, Mr. Chamchawalla: he'd say that he's seen it all before, both in Jews and in their adversaries.
@F, Please be included spain, italy, england, south america latin america etc.
@Solomon2: Just wondering what Solomon1 would think of Solomon2s and David2s; disappointed, embarrassed, ashamed or would even recognize them at all!
@naeem khan Manhattan.Ks: Or could it be he was scared of what you and your fellows might do if he told you the truth?
I recall how scared the American politicians are from the Jewish lobby. Pakistani community in Wichita Kansas had a fund raising dinner for then Senator Brownback, he was asked questions about Kashmir and the plight of it's people and later on I asked him about the Palestinians people's plight and his answer to me was " it is a different bucket of worms." I could see how scared he was to say anything because the Jewish lobby would get after him, it was being recorded.
@Kent Kilpatrick: So it is OK for the White Countries to go to colonize African or Asian countries, it was this colonization which created the racial problems in the first place. Lets see how many million native Indians we have killed to make them White, and how many blacks to import to do our dirty White jobs. I thought that White USA has benefited from the brain drain of Africa and Asia and they have contributed to US's wealth immensely. There is racism still prevalent all over so called White Countries specially in the USA,and we just saw the results of this blind racism in Wisconsin the other day when Sikh worshipers were guns down. The problem with you is that you think Africans and Asians are inferior people and could not come up to Whites intelligence, well if Whites are so smart then what is it that they invade other countries while killing thousands of their citizens, ( Iraq), for their resources and in the end attracts so much hatred that some day the same very people will be knocking at our doors to do the things which may not like but then again we could kill the whole world with our mighty military machine and prove to the world that Whites are Superior to all the darkies, too bad those darkies in Afghanistan has not lay down their arms and now we are negotiating with those darkies because we can't lick them. Get a life man.
@Gratgy: Your knowledge of South Africa is not that sound. Zulus are only one of the tribes in SA. Nelson Mandela, the nobel Prize winner is not a Zulu. We all migrated from here to there. Your logic lacks scientific knowledge.
@Kent Kilpatrick:
Most of us do not have a problem with White Nationalism - but when that gets conflated with attacking Muslims and supporting Israel regardless of right/wrong of the situation you need to rethink WHY?
Does anyone really want the Israeli-Palestine issue to be solved? Israel may not want it because it can have more settlements in the West bank etc. Palestinians do not want it because they want the entire area backk. For the Arab states around, the issue is a God-sent opportunity to divert people attention from social, technological, economic and political progress ... the Christians are content with the staus quo because they can access Jerusalem easily with it being under Jewish control rather than Muslim control... Iran gets a reason to interfere in the Arab states - it is getting stronger militarily claiming Israel as the reason but the other reason is also to balance Sunni Pakistan and Sunni Saudi Arabia... Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs dont really care much ...
@Gratgy:
... and going on forever... since we all came out of Africa, let us all 6 billion of us squeeze back into Africa and leave the rest of the world for animals and birds and plants to thrive...
@Ali tanoli: And yet he is the prime contestant for president of America !!!! In civilized world there is no "cast out sect"
@Kent Kilpatrick Please get the whites out of America, Canada, South Africa, Australia New Zealand etc, They are not "White Countries".
America belongs to the Red Indians South Africa belongs to the Zulus Australia to the Aborigines New Zealand to the Maoris Central Asia to the Mongolian tribes, ethnic kazakhs etc I can go on forever
Surprising that Mr. fatemi sees this as mere "antics." He is a senior diplomat and one would expect deeper understanding of the issues from him. Does he still believe that "Two State" solution will ever see the day light? Is he unaware of Jews embracing new "Judo-Christian" identity, going into voluntary amnesia of havoc wreacked upon them by Romans to Nazis through out the length and breadth of Europe? He has been to EU; does he still see Turkey ever becoming part of European Union EVEN IF Turks repent and handover Hagia Sophia to Orthodoxy? He is either too naive or unrealistically opimistic!
I do not agree that Romney did a good job in Osrael and if this was his tactic, he failed miserably. He annoyed USA’s closest ally by suggesting that it is not entirely ready for the Olympics, even before his first official meeting with Israeli leaders. Nor is it right to go on to imply that Palestinian Arabs are in some way culturally inferior, or to refuse to answer more than three press questions on the whole trip while your media people tell disgruntled hacks that they can “kiss my ass”. From a presentational point of view, it was, as the critics said, a bit of a Romneyshambles. He needs to learn a lot on external policies. I am not sure if his views make any sense on the home front either.
Obama has not been a great performer either. He did not, as he promised, halt the rise of the oceans, or close the prison camp at Guantánamo within a year of taking office, or bring about peace between Israel and Palestine, or forge a better relationship with the Muslim world, despite the eloquence of his Cairo speech. The electorate is more inclined to give Obama a second term. Romney’s middle East tour has, if anything, boosted Obama’s chances.
What the former Ambassador writes is all true. The manner in which Israel and its friends have come to dominate the US political process is truly unfortunate. In such a situation, the US will never be able to play any meaningful role in the Middle East, all pretensions of being fair and just will carry no conviction with the people of that region.
Why is it that when Muslims are in a majority that non muslims and women are systematically marginalized, subjugated and eliminated. Ahmadiyas, Hindus in Pakistan, Christians in Egypt and Iraq to name a few. 'Islamic' culture is so superior that it denies rights to others yet seeks dominance over others. Despite its inherent "superiority" why is it that Islamic societies continue to languish in every area of human endeavor? Might it be Culture that devotes its energies on emasculating everything about others?
@Kent Kilpatrick: You forget a small detail -whites colonized rest of the world and looted it for four centuries. Former slaves are in "White" lands just getting back a portion of that loot, period.
@Kent Kilpatrick Nobody is committing genocide against white people. White people are themselves to Blame for their pathetic birth rate and weak family systems. Secondly, you need immigrants to increase your populations. If there's low population in your country you would have a tiny domestic market. The reason China n India are doing well is cz they have a huge domestic market
@Vikas:
"Support jews. They are the smartest people in the world."
Not sure if they are SMARTEST, but they are definitely smarter than you.
@vikas and may be crook too like banyas.
@Kent Kilpatrick
I am brown, but I agree. Where ever they are, every one of them, be it white, black, brown, yellow or whatever should be send back to their country of origin.
@Kent: I think you are posting this in the wrong forum mate. This is not a white supremist site. Kindly take your hate elsewhere
Support jews. They are the smartest people in the world.
"ASIA FOR THE ASIANS, AFRICA FOR THE AFRICANS, WHITE COUNTRIES FOR EVERYBODY!"
Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY white country and ONLY into white countries.
The Netherlands and Belgium are just as crowded as Japan or Taiwan, but nobody says Japan or Taiwan will solve this RACE problem by bringing in millions of third worlders and quote assimilating unquote with them.
Everybody says the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY white country and ONLY white countries to “assimilate,” i.e., intermarry, with all those non-whites.
What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?
How long would it take anyone to realize I’m not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?
And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn’t object to this?
But if I tell that obvious truth about the ongoing program of genocide against my race, the white race, Liberals and respectable conservatives agree that I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews.
They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-white.
Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white.
After seeing those remarks of his, I am convinced that Mitt Romney might have a place in Lucky Irani circus, but certainly not in the white house.
What Romney declared was just as true in 1930 when there was no occupation as today when there is: link
