The daunting task ahead

KARACHI: This is with reference to Khurram Husain’s article “The 911 state” (August 19).  The writer has painted a realistic picture of where we stand today, having mutilated our own image and credibility the world over. The proposition propounded by him to let the UN take the control of all operations, ranging from relief to reconstruction and rehabilitation, is one that the government should seriously think of allowing. The experience and the expertise of the world body in dealing with disasters of such magnitude coupled with the credibility of the organisation would soften the attitude of the international community towards us and the flow of all manner

of assistance is likely to start on the one hand and the image of the country will get a much-needed boost on the other.
