At least 245 polling stations were set-up for the by-polls.
Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, and Minister Information Qamar Zaman Kaira congratulated Abdul Qadir Gilani on the victory. Ashraf said conducting free and fair by-elections in NA-151 were a good omen for democracy in Pakistan.
President Zardari also felicitated former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on his son's electoral victory.
The NA-151 seat had fallen vacant after former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani was disqualified from his post by the Supreme Court in a contempt of court case earlier this year. Gilani’s son Abdul Qadir Gilani was selected by the ruling PPP to contest on the seat.
Malik Ishaq Bucha was also supposed to be running for the seat from Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N), but he left his party to join the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) earlier this month. The PML-N then announced its support for Bosan, who is the brother of Sikandar Bosan of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).
Sikandar Bosan had also taken back his nomination papers after his party decided to boycott the by-elections.

Sounds like defaeat for PPP to me. Their margin of win is reduced considerably. This is despite central Govt acting as local, provincial and federal Govt at the same time in Multan, and despite spending Billion of Rupees and using Govt. machinery without shame. Not all opposition vpoters voted for the other candidate. No leader of PTI or PMLN campaingned.PPP is doomed in Punjab.Only PTI can save it by dividing votes. I hope PTI surpass all obstacles and really wins not only act as spoiler. They should go after all parties and the whole country and not only focus on PMLN.
Jiye Corruption. Kleptocracy is the best revenge.
why u guys cannot accept the reality. this is democracy. people chose what they like. you can't teach them from your drawing room to like this that and hate this that. They are wiser than you are and better know what to do and what not to do.
U just poll your own vote and keep silent. feel the revenge of democracy.
khamosh maaaar.
Abdul Qadir Gilani has won the by-election in NA-151 after the seat was left vacant following the disqualification of his father. vote detay raho roote raho watch this exclusive video: http://goo.gl/bqKFo
@Freeman do you really think the turnout in general election will be 100% ?
An impoverished country of 180 million people. Where poor illiterate masses have no say no thinking no weight, their only concern is FOOD and a JOB. Where ven well off people sell off for only a single job. Will they bring change by voting??? Who will defeat this OLIGARCHY in elections, an oligarchy which has tonnes of corruption and black money. Who's cronies control the whole system and government machinery. Think about it. Those who think PTI will win live in a fools paradise.
Hi @Zeeshan: Tell me who is not corrupt in this country? If corruption is the benchmark for you and your like minded then you will be left alone in finding the answer to the question "Whom I should Love? Whom I should vote? My advice is find something else such as who has the courage to stand for the people against any usurper. Am I right?
Qadir Gillani won but mismanagement on large scale has been seen in voting lists because these elections were held on 2007's electoral lists but the messages from ECP received on mobiles and the given receipts about polling booths/stations were according to the fresh voting lists and the voters were sent from one polling station to another polling station repeatedly in the hot weather thus lots of votes were missed out or couldn't cast..........
people have won ,may be ignorant and poor but their man has won
The outcome of this election shows that Imran cannot win any seat anywhere in the country. Multan is the home town of PTI's three strongest leaders (JH, SMQ abd Bosan) and still they could not win this seat.. Test tube baby has died in womb.
Sack one more PM and watch PPP winning two third majority. This is the result of selective justice.
PTI is selling itself through media inflated bubble. That's why PTI always hide from ballot power and try to get extra-political help by invoking Tsunamis
@Not me: you will never ever accept reality
The result rang the bells in PPP circle and they are very concern. It can only be understand by the people aware of by election dynamics. From this result, any political worker can predict that Gilani will lose general election.
There is a reason why Multan is the city of the saints. Too many corrupt
All those who are against the PTI right now, will be cursing themselves once PTI clean sweeps in the upcoming elections.. PTI doesn't want to spent its energy and money on a SEAT for one two months... Let me also tell you that how come your are supporting the same government which is supposed to drain blood from your veins now cuz that's the only thing remaining in the masses of Pakistan.. For Allah sake please do something to save the Pakistan..
@Blithe both PPP and coalition candidate had the same slogan of creation of province, PPP sold it well, one can criticize its governance but as for as state's constitutional requirements as per people aspirations are concerned, PPP's record is best, rather they creators and defenders of constitution. Small administrative units are necessary so that backward areas can also develop, generate their sources of income and have right to spend that income at will for development. As far as PPP governance is concerned, judiciary and other powerful institutions made it difficult to judge whether they are bad at governance or continuous interference by said institutions in state affairs was cause of non-deliverance besides terrorism, afghan war and most importantly loss of their leader in act of terrorism. To be fair they were not allowed a level playing field and if you think they should get filtered in electoral process, that does not seem to happen this time due to mentioned reasons. Result of NA 151 should be taken seriously by the non-democratic forces. It shows the maturity of the voters, which means they do not like undemocratic decisions, despite hardships during last four years they still went with democracy which is ray of hope.
This win shows that the nation has learned a thing from the past 4 years.
I am happy that PPP candidate won from Multan. PMLN is open enemy to Saraiki language, area and people. For them,Pakistan and Punjab starts from Sahiwal and ends up in Rawalpindi.
Please Saraikis, vote for any party except PMLN;the racists.
If PPP retains power then people will effectively sign Pakistan's death certificate.
Those who came up with the phrase "democracy is the best revenge" will be drowning V soon in a Giant people's Tsunami led by Imran Khan.
Oops!!! Tsunami threat was a false alarm....
How can a sane person vote for these Gilani jokers? No wondor Pakistan is going down the drain.
@stone age:
Who is stopping you? -- PM (ex) Gilani
Long live Zardari
PPP will also win the next elections. The elites reading this paper can remain in denial but the reality is that pti cannot overcome this voting behavior through slogans and marches and boycotts alone. PPP has a guaranteed vote bank and we saw that today.
Shame for those who voted for gillani.i just want to leave this country now.
One thing is for sure, this election proved that if PTI decided to contest elections independently that will be the demise of this party and IK will be responsible. At the moment he is also helping PPP by opposing NS. Still there is a time for him to open his mind.
So much for a super majority in south Punjab wanting to create a separate province .
If new province was such a demand , Gilani should have at least gotten 75 percent of the vote .
PML N should not fall in the trap of creating a new province . People of Punjab would never forgive them if they fall in the PPP trap!!!
CJ+IJI+PTI+ shah mahmood Ghaznavi+ who hate PPP for no reason stand defeated. Free and fair elections PPP always wins. congratulations to supporters and voters of PPP.
People of Multan have spoken once again. Without any ifs and buts or excuses let us bow down to the will of the people. So much for the PCO SC and their popularity. People can see through all the "fairness" that the judges are showing. Kudos to Gilani for his victory.
@roadkashehzada: "PTI reminds me my cousin who used to take more time to adjust water temprature than actual shower."
How do you know what your cousin does/did in the shower?
PML N is the winner as they showed graciousness and fought with a combined effort . The results are so close - ppp had been shaken from its stronghold .
PTI is the loser as they focus more on fighting PML N than PPP.
Democracy is ultimately a two party system. Since 1970 elections, mostly it has been PPP v/s all others. If democracy is allowed to work this would further crystallize. All the constituencies will have neck to neck fight like this bye election. PML(N), PTI and JI are natural allies and should realize it better sooner than later.
This defeating is not for Shouqt bosan .PPPP did defeat to all parties such as Pml, PTI,Jamate islami and lota shah mehmood qureshi. Alla ka shukar hay Allah na pppp ka sir buland rakha hay. Jeooooooooooooooooooooooooooo zadari .
@Waseem Arif may be he does not know that its provincial government that provide help and administration to election commission for conducting elections.
.......and the losers are the people of Pakistan.
hahaha....what a superficial conclusion....so that is how our intellectual see things....when the Gilllani was was convicted on 26th april, the same day there was polling in multan....a contest between PPP and PML N candidate whereas PTI boycotted the election. the total registered voters were more than180,000. the PPP candidate got 20,430 (approximately) whereas PML N candidate got 20,000 and lost by around 400 votes only. Our so called intellectuals and media started saying tthe same thing that its people verdict and blah blah blah... (1) almost half of the voters (who voted) reject PPP (while supporting PML N)...(2) and most importantly, what about the remaining 140,000 voters who boycotted the election on call from PTI?....so my friend don't go for superficial analysis.....go deep...(2) so with how many voted PPP (with the use of all its govt machinary) won today? was the gap huge? (1) Did IK or any PTI leader campainged for Sikandar Bosan? (3) did CJ asked for voting Sikandar Bosan?....you so called liberal does not have the heart to realize truth...start lebeling people as how your hearts want and concluding with your norrow wisdom and bias....
I am losing hope that I will see the real democracy in Pakistan in my life-time.. May Allah protect Pakistan from dynasties and their remanants..
@pakistani: Are you living in Pakistan or Mars? With a PMLN government in Punjab, government machinery working for a PPP win. How pathetic can one be?
@Kamran: i was actually looking for a rude comment from some PTI supporter. thanks, now i can get back to work
Shame on those who tried to out PPP through undemocratic means. They should now shut up, and make a bonfire of their poetry and their sermons.
This was a one on one contest between PPP and 2012 version of IJI. Those who think PPP has evaporated live in fools paradise. You can imagine what will happen in next elections when PPP will be facing a bitterly split IJI and on the average there will be three right wing candidates against PPP.
@ Not me, i think the opposite, joint candidate of PTI, PML (N), Jamat e Islami and judiciary in area under PML (N) rule is defeated by PPP alone, it is any eye opener for all, as PTI says they will not form coalition with any other party, then you can guess what will be the outcome when all contesting separately against PPP. It remains a fact since 1970, anti PPP forces join hands together and still can not defeat PPP in fair elections. on top of it judiciary's bias against PPP can make PPP single largest party with enough seats to form government alone.
What happened to those PEW polls?
PPP can beat all of them collectively, next time we will have PPP govt in Punjab also. Imran Khan sorry, you are a loser, Asghar Khan of tomorrow :)
PPP wins, PTI & PMLn Combo failed ..... ;-)
Where are all those who were posting Poll Results? These are real Polls, the power of people! Jiye Bhutto
Gilani is the winner, Bosan is collective loser. lol, you guys can not be serious.
Will be a close contest. In theory Gilani should have won by a big margin due to sympathy factor but close result will clearly reflect demise of PPP in coming election
Bosan in lead of 2000 after results of 160 .. but nothing final yet..
@Mountie......you cannt judge vote bank of any party with elections on one seat and pti is preparing itself for general elections....this election is on seat which is to be emptied just after six months and whole government machinery is working there for PPP to win......
@ Kamran I'm also PTI supporter but does it give me the authroity to say people "brainless". I think as a PTI supporters we should need to behave as-well. Just give your augu without cursing everyone else.
Hope you'll not mind
@M.Aswad Mehtab:
looks like we a phd in politics here,. could you please explain all of the failures in politics over here why exactly shouldnt the pti run for the 'throne'(whatever that means in this context)
@Abbas Khan: Please read today's newspapers you will get to know why Gilani opted to go.
The people will give a slap to the Judiciary by electing Gilani Jr with a thumping margin. Imran showed considerable political astuteness by not putting up a candidate and demoralising his cadres.
@noora khusti. The significance of this election to show that you have a candidate and enough vote bank that you can actually win a seat in national assembly.
@ Zeeshan, Gillani was not sent home on corruption charges. It was constitutional matter. Common people are not stupid, they know the difference.
why is so important for PTI to contest NA 151, when they are busy in their party election. What is the impact of this seat by the way?
Those who think PTI should also run for the throne ..Common Guys , Don't you know the Game?? Please consult some one who know what is politics he will tell you WHY NOT !!
@ Usman Khan.
Sometimes it is not used to call support, it is called hate against corrupt mafia. so they (PTI) are showing their hate only.
Ashan Iqbal, please hire me, I wil l do a much better job than these guys who are making baseless accusations on PTI and their comments make no sense.
@ Awan Look at the comments of @Hasbeen. You will get your answer. Though it's true that "nothing could be changed until it is faced" but wait for comming election. it is not too far just six months or less to wait. Hope you will be on list of voters aswell.
Whole Multan is lit up with PTI banners in favour of Bosan and they still say, they did not support anyone...
Ohh God....
Those who say that PTI is supporting candidate in NA 151 should see this
http://s8.postimage.org/sccrn6zpf/mu1ane.jpg
Imran Khan remind me of Boxer Amir Khan who used to say he will Knockout any opponent but when he faced the real Opposition he got owned. So I am Afraid in next elections Imran Khan will even lose his own Seat. Everyone is disappointed by PTI's decision to give PPP a clean chit again to win elections.
@HRK, thanks. @aj, did you get it now?
Why was it a test case for PTI? PTI has been asking everyone to resign from the current assemblies and call for fresh elections, so why contest a bi-election for the same assembly? Question for my PMLN supporting friends who have posted above, if by some miracle Bosan does win (which he will never) would it be considered PTI's victory?
By elections, even a kid knows who will win. PTI does not want to lose now. By u can still vote for N and Z, since they have done wonders of Pakistan and have not tried to sell it.
@Umsan Khan: You know PTI is not going to ally with PPP at any cost...no one jumps into a sinking ship. On a side note, they seem to be at least the best based on credibility when compared to all other parties.
@aj: Ahh...you (and seems like a lot of people) didn't get the sarcasm in his comment =) Look at the capitalization =)
How come PTI boycott every election? they should face the ground realities and make their space. Can't have the Brit style clean democracy in PAK
@Raza Khan: i think more scared than scary
PTI is just a time water...
Dont waste any single vote to PTI, any single vote to PTI will favour PPP/ANP/PMLQ & MQM electoral alliance against PMLN...
PMLN is not the best, but they are 100 times better than PPP & 1000 times better then MQM...
PMLN all the way...
PMLN is supporting PTI's candidate. A hard contest for Gilani's son.
There is no hope for Pakistan since we love to vote for people like Gilani infact we don't deserve sincere leaders we only deserve people who will drive us in the the abyss further.
PTI is just a scary kid!
Friends -any clue who is going to win this election...
Lets see who gets knocked out and stop kidding ourselves that it was an independent candidate. final round Supreme Court versus the PPP
PTI reminds me my cousin who used to take more time to adjust water temprature than actual shower
Loud and clear... PTI did not contest this election. So no tension for PTI at all.
This is a Test case Election for PTI. PTI is using its full force for the brother of Skindar Hayat Bosan. Elections will determine the strength of PTI
If gilani wins then PtTI is finished
Why is PTI afraid to contest elections? Beats me.
Why was convicted Gilani taking part in the election campaign? EC should take notice.
Here once again king of corruption Mr.Gallani's son will win the election. Corrupt politicians will be always win until mentality level of peoples change.
@truth detector if you detect truth your device must be malfunctioned ..get it checked..
This was a great opportunity for PTI to prove their popularity but it has shown once again that its afraid to contest elections.
Let me guess, Gillani won by a land-slide. People just LOVE PPP and Gillanis for all the HARDWORK they have put to make THEIR lot better.
