A total of 170 Arabic and science subject teachers working under the Rawalpindi District Education Department in Attock on contract-basis were sacked on Monday. The teachers, however, have demanded that they be regularised.
The teachers had been receiving a fixed monthly salary of Rs5,000 since 2007, Attaur rehman, a representative of the teachers told The Express Tribune. He said that the education department did not regularise the teachers on the pretext that they were inducted in violation of rules. He maintained that posts of the teacher were advertised in national newspapers and after they were selected for the vacant posts, they were issued appointment letters by the District Education Officer Elementary Education. He said that most of the sacked teacher are aged and are the only breadwinners for their families. “Firing them is tantamount to starving their families,” he said.
