KARACHI: Two men, who are believed to be involved in the murder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) MPA Raza Haider, have been arrested by the Sindh police’s Special Investigations department, said Sindh IGP Sultan Salahuddin Baber Khattak at the police head office on Thursday.

A police party led by SSP Operations Mohammed Fayaz Khan and SSP Chaudhry Aslam arrested Mohammed Waseem, also known as Barodi, and Abdullah, also known as Taimoor, during an encounter in Orangi Town late Wednesday night, the IGP said.

Both men have been accused of sectarian killings as well as their involvement in the murder of the MPA, along with the killings of brothers Asif Raza and Sheraz Raza, Dr Junaid Haidri and Khadim Hussain, among others.

One Kalashnikov with a loaded magazine, one TT pistol, one 9mm pistol, 100kg of the explosive RDX, two RPG rockets, a 30-metre detonating code, five detonators and a motorcycle were seized from the possession of the accused men, claimed the police.

The IGP said that the accused belonged to the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. “Waseem, a resident of Orangi, had been imprisoned for three years - between 2005 and 2008 - [for his alleged involvement] in many cases, while Abdullah, a resident of Landhi, joined the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi at the age of 20, after he committed his first murder on the basis of a personal enmity,” said the IGP. “Abdullah was also arrested in 2005 and jailed for three years on charges of dealing in suicide jackets.”

During questioning, both men reportedly revealed the names of their alleged accomplices - Hafiz Qasim, Ayaz Adil and Ikhlzaq, among others - who are also wanted by the police and have been declared absconders.

Meanwhile, the police are further investigating the matter and it is hoped that, with the help of the accused men, they will be able to arrest more criminals involved in target killings, said Khattak. Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Ali Mirza and Khattak announced a financial award of Rs1 million for the police party that conducted the raid. CCPO Karachi Waseem Ahmed and other police officials also attended the press conference.
