Workshop: ‘Mothers should watch out for kids’ drug use’

Women must take a lead role in the campaign against drugs by discouraging their use among their children, said a consultant with the government’s anti-drug programme on Sunday.

Zulfiqar Hussain, speaking at a workshop, said that the government was setting up a drug abuse information and counselling centre in Lahore. The centre would provide counselling for drug addicts and their families and an internship programme for young people, and coordinate with law-enforcement agencies to help reduce the number of drug users in Pakistan.

Hussain said that the government would also launch a campaign to stop drug use in parks, gardens, footpaths and other public places in the city. He thanked District Coordination Officer Noorul Amin Mengal for setting up district level crime and anti-narcotics committees.

The workshop was organised by the Youth Council for Anti-Narcotics and the Pakistan Girl Guides Association and held at Girl Guides’ House here. The workshop was chaired by Provincial Commissioner Nafisa Sikandar Malhi. Psychologist Muhammad Nazif and Malik Javed also spoke on the ocassion.
