OIC calls for urgent aid

An OIC spokesman confirmed that the Islamic Development Bank has allocated $11.2 million for assistance to Pakistan.

The Organisation of The Islamic Conference (OIC) called on member states and the international community for urgent aid to Pakistan on Wednesday.

An OIC spokesman confirmed that the Islamic Development Bank has allocated $11.2 million for assistance to Pakistan.

The OIC called in a communiqué for the international community and Islamic world to provide urgent material and financial aid to Pakistan.

The appeal was issued at an emergency meeting for representatives of member states of the organisation.

OIC secretary general Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu told the meeting that the OIC will hold a meeting in Pakistan for Islamic Red Crescent societies and relief bodies to coordinate aid.

Saudi Arabia fundraising campaign

Saudi Arabia has collected $27 million for the flood affectees through the Saudi Public Assistance Campaign on the directives of King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz. Food items, quilts, clothes and items of daily use have been collected during the campaign.

King Abdullah has donated 20 million riyals, Saudi Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz donated 10 million riyals, while Saudi Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz contributed five million riyals to the assistance fund.

The assistance campaign will continue throughout Ramazan so that Saudi citizens can donate generously. The oil-rich kingdom has already sent 16 planeloads of relief supply for the flood victims.

Sultan Ahmed. | 14 years ago | Reply Come forward, it is a time of test, a great Muslim country is in danger , and fighting a war on terror, and defense of its own stability, and life of hundred and hundred of thousand people stranded in the ragging flood and facing torrential rains time is getting out, delay can be reason of death of any innocent person.

We pakistani people, don't have any thing to do for ourself, and ofcourse the victoms enlist the countries, weither they are able to do some think or not. We are not able to, at-least look after our Govt. We are failed to manage our rights toward Govt. We are not capible to understand the situation and respond accordingly. Army donates sermony amount to flood victoms and Prisident making there visits.

The $11.2 million from the Islamic Development Bank + the $27 million from the Saudi Public Assistance Campaign, a total of < $30 million, is a reflection of the impotence of IDB and OIC; some detractors go to the extent of referring to the latter as the *Organisation of Impotent Countries*. The OIC communiqué for the international community and Islamic world to provide urgent material and financial aid to Pakistan is a joke. Why can’t its members, some of whom are sitting on huge foreign exchange reserves (not to mention oil and gas reserves) open their cheque books and make donations? Actions speak louder than words; Pakistan has often gone beyond its call of duty in being supportive of these regimes in diplomatic quarters and also providing troops to save the seats of power of more than just one Humpty Dumpty in the Islamic world. These countries must understand that a weakened Pakistan is detrimental to their medium-to-long-term strategic interests.

Niaz Khattak | 14 years ago | Reply International Community has always helped Pakistan in the time of need.They pledged more than 6 billion rupees for re-habilitation when Pakistan was badly jolted by earthquake on 8 October 2005.More than 73000 people died in that earthquake and all infrastructure and villages destroyed in the northern areas of Kashmir and Abbotabad. The money distribution was not equality based and people still have complaints. I therfore, request the foreign donators to make survey themselves , appoint their own delegations and distribute money with their own hands instead of doing this job through political or any other organisation in Pakistan. If this amount was given to political leaders, they will distribute it through their activists and these activists will give priority to those who gave them votes and thus the desrving and helpless poor people shall be ignored. Some people donot leave their homes to come on roads after aid due to self respect although they have got more devastation in this flood. such deserving people will be helped without injuring their self respect.thanks

Sultan Ahmed. | 14 years ago | Reply We have no right to criticize any foreign governments which providing us aid for people badly effected by ragging ocean like flood and torrential rains, but would like to say herein that The United States provide us record breaker aid, Saudi Arabia is rich at the level should do more because at the time of panic whole Muslims seek toward with full hope.
