Lodhi survives day of upsets

National masters shocked in chess event.

Mehmood Lodhi leads the National Chess Championship after the ninth round while national masters Wahid Hussain, Mohammad Younus and Hafeez Bajwa were beaten by lower-ranked players in the morning’s eighth round at Beach Luxury Hotel, Karachi.


The biggest win on the fourth day of the championship came when unseed Asif Rehmani defeated Younus in 67 moves and joined the race for second place in the 80-man competition. Meanwhile, Waqar Madni defeated Hussain and Shakir Hussain defeated Bajwa as well. Lodhi continued his undefeated run in the ninth round when he outplayed Riasat Ali Nizami, who is also competing for second place, by 6.5 points. The men’s championship concludes today.

Meanwhile, Zinobia Wasif regained her national title when she defeated defending champion Nida Siddique 31-30 in a tie-break.
