LAHORE/ KARACHI:

The Lahore Bar Association (LBA) observed a strike and boycotted the courts on Wednesday in protest against the election of Raja Pervaiz Ashraf as the country’s prime minister as well as against power outages.

Lawyers wore black ribbons and hoisted black flags at the District & Sessions Court and other subordinate courts. They restrained from appearing before courts, forcing judges to adjourn cases.

The LBA will also observe strike today (Thursday) on the call of the Pakistan Bar Counsel and Punjab Bar Counsel to express solidarity with the judiciary.

Talking to The Express Tribune, lawyers said that “another dacoit” has come to run the country after “former dacoit” Yousaf Raza Gilani. .

Similarly, expressing their fierce censure, the lawyers’ community of Karachi, including members of Karachi Bar Association (KBA) and Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA), rebuffed the election of Ashraf as the new prime minister.

“He is tainted and declared by the Supreme Court of Pakistan as an accused in the Rental Power projects scam,” said KBA President Mehmoodul Hasan, while addressing a general body meeting of the association.

“He (the new premier) has refused to write a letter to Swiss authorities and we reject a prime minister defiant to the apex court,” he added.

The courts of Pakistan are politically embroiled. They have taken over from the politicians and how would they bring justice to this land.
