MULTAN:

Police on Wednesday registered FIRs against eight named and 150 unidentified men for vandalising the offices of Multan Electricity and Power Company (Mepco) and other government buildings on Tuesday.

Police said the eight men include local traders and members of the PML-N.

Sub Divisional Officer Amir Ansari said the losses caused by yesterday’s protests in Jalalpur Pirwala, a sub district of Multan, were estimated at Rs1.5 million.

He said the eight men were nominated in three FIRs. They included and leaders of the traders and business communities.

The protest began as a rally against the rising crime rate in the area, but later turned into a protest against power outages. Protesters had burnt two sub divisional offices and Mepco vehicles to protest against loadshedding. They had also attacked the building of the town municipal administration. Cases have been registered under Sections 7, 148/149, 186/353 and 395/427 of the Anti Terrorism Act on complaint by TMO Muhammad Iqbal. No arrests have been made so far.
