Following investigations into the writing of a fake letter recommending extensions for thirty five Pakistani police officers on UN missions abroad, Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Saturday arrested Joint Secretary Interior Aslam Joya and Section Officer Waheed Memon.
Sources told The Express Tribune that the letter was written to UN Peacekeeping authorities a few days back in which the writing authority, the interior ministry, endorsed extensions for one year in the term of 35 Pakistani police officers working with UN Peacekeeping missions in different conflict zones of the world.
The terms of the police officers were due to end this year and the ministry only realised the presence of such letter after receiving a reply from the UN authorities. “It was followed up and the whole scandal was out,” said an FIA official.
Following the surfacing of the letter scandal, interior minister Rehman Malik directed SIU to investigate the matter. Subsequently the SIU arrested two senior officers of the Interior Ministry.
An official said the investigation unit was making raids for more arrests.
