The Sindh division of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has arrested principal appraiser of customs Sadar Amin Farooq in connection with the Isaf containers scam, according to a press release.
Farooq was accused of misusing the Afghan transit facility along with other clearing agents and officials. Farooq had maintained the post of principal appraiser between 2001 and 2010. NAB also arrested another official, Eastern Agency Clearing Agent Wasif Shah in connection with the case.
The appraiser, Farooq, was arrested after an inquiry initiated by NAB. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had referred complaints about the misuse of the Afghan transit facility on the orders of the Supreme Court. The complaints stated that clearing agents and others were clearing containers carrying goods meant for import to Afghanistan under the Afghan Transit Trade Agreement – but the goods never crossed the border and were disposed of in Pakistan.
Earlier, NAB arrested six clearing agents who were responsible for clearing 200 containers that never reached their destination.
The names of the arrested agents are Abdul Manaf, Mehmood Alam, Muhammad Rafiq, Irfan Haider Rizvi, Muhammad Irfan and Malik Ishtiaq Ahmed. The scam caused loses worth billions of rupees.
