LAHORE: Ataul Haque Qasmi, the Alhamra art centre chairman, expressed his condolences on the sad demise of legendary singer Mehdi Hassan. He described it as a loss that will be felt across the subcontinent. People have lost the ‘king of ghazal singing’, he said. “Mehdi Hassan had to go through trials and tribulations early in his life,” he noted, “but it was his passion for music [and a ‘golden’ voice] that helped him achieve greatness.” He added that Hassan had left behind a rich legacy and a treasure trove of beautiful melodies.
