ISLAMABAD:
Growth in information and communication technology (ICT) is a reliable indicator of economic and social uplift of a country. Countries like Sweden, Norway, Germany and Australia all top the World Bank’s Knowledge Economy Index (KEI), an evaluation of research in knowledge generation, sharing, connectivity and IT infrastructure. Pakistan improved five positions jumping from 122nd to 117th position. Proof of this can be seen in the recent announcement that PTCL had recorded over a million broadband customers in the country.
This is good but Pakistan has a long way to go. Introduction of modern technologies, such as 3G and 4G, needs to be achieved in the national communication and IT infrastructure and there has to be a massive upgrade of the existing technical infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of users.
