England’s management is set to rest James Anderson for next week’s third Test against the West Indies, according to The Telegraph.
Anderson, who is likely to be replaced in the playing-eleven by Steven Finn, will not be happy with the selectors’ decision despite suffering a slight niggle to his quadriceps. His disappointment comes to no surprise, considering how the West Indies top order has offered such easy pickings in the series.
Another man who could be rested is fast-bowler Stuart Broad, although the selectors plan to take a decision on him closer to the start of the match. With an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the series, the selectors have the luxury of shuffling the starting line-up.
“We need to manage the bowlers’ workload and take the long term view,” said Geoff Miller, England’s national selector.
The decision to rest key men has been taken keeping in mind England’s upcoming series against South Africa. Anderson is seen as being crucial against South Africa’s openers especially Graeme Smith, a left-hander vulnerable to the ball swinging back into his pads.
England play the third and last Test of the series from June 7 in Birmingham.
