Addressing a rally in Sahiwal in protest against loadshedding, Sharif called on President Asif Ali Zardari to bring back all the “looted money from Switzerland, and money looted through other scams,” and use it to produce electricity in the country.
“A journalist once asked me: You’re the Khaadim-e-Aala, you’re the Punjab chief minister, who are you going to stand for? I said: This isn’t even a question. Of course, I’m with those who have been looted.”
Sharif further vowed to the people that he will stand by their side till his last breath.
People want electricity, not democracy: Shahbaz Sharif
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Saturday that the people of Pakistan want electricity, not democracy from the government, reported Express News.
Sharif, during his second visit to his camp office at Minar-e-Pakistan, said that the circular debt worth Rs100 billion, the leaders’ corruption and the written-off loans were behind the ongoing energy crisis in the country.
If this money comes back, then 4,000MW electricity will be added to the grid within a day, Sharif added.
“I believe that protests are the right of the people. I’m standing with these people and I’ll even leave the government for them,” Sharif stated, saying it was decision of his party and its leadership.
“People are dying of hunger, and they [government] are busy looting. They are even ridiculing the judiciary.”
Sharif further announced fixing generators with tube wells to deal with the water shortage in the province.
The Punjab chief minister, joining protests against loadshedding, shifted his office to the Minar-e-Pakistan ground on Friday.
Correction: An earlier headline and copy of this article incorrectly stated that Sharif will continue protest till thieves are 'not chained' instead of 'chained'. The correction has been made.

Revolution is the most abused word in Punjab politics. Revolutions are not brought about in the leadership of people who have been in power half a dozen times both in the center and in the province combined. Revolutions and revolutionary leaders are a different breed. A young Fidel Castro, a young Martin Luther King, a young Gandhi, a young ZAB, to name a few. Not tried tested and failed leaders in their retirement age. Revolutions are fast moving and not evolutionary after decades of inertia.
@gujranwala987: There will be no difference after all he is also sharif.
Poor guy just asking to chain him else he will keep protesting.
CMPunjab's Ofc at Minar e Pakistan using stolen electricity, reported by Geo. Anything more u people need to uncover them
means till he is arrested?
@Ch. Allah Daad: Chaudary saab, with all due respect, I am actually your fan, you support your leader like no other (which I appreciate) but if you can please answer my question Q) OK, Karachi has its own company but what khadem-e-ala has done in his 4 years to meet electricity demands? except go on a protest when the elections are very near!! You can give me one example, just one example when the Punjab provincial government tried to do anything to solve the issue and actually managed to provide some relief. Just saying the electricity supply falls under federal government does not make you run away from your responsibilities and going on a protest is just a cheap publicity stunt, playing with popular sentiments of the jahil awam.
I see really competent and extraordinary PML N leaders at the centre , like Ch Nisar, Khwaja Asif, Khurram Dastiger , Saad Rafiq , Ahsan Iqbal etc.
Why don't these leaders at the centre participate in the Punjab Govt.? They should have been MPAs and contributed to Punjab.
Instead , we have PML N trying to be more Pakistani than Pakistani at the centre and ignoring the needs and rights of Punjab.
And now they are even saying that it's okay to divide Punjab but not at all okay to divide Sindh.
Punjabi are not going to tolerate this much longer... PML N must focus on Punjab first. Otherwise PML N is out.
@Shahid Malik: And what good would that do???? Talk sense!
@ Faraz, Karachi has its own electric supply company, whereas in Punjab, power generation and transmisstion is under federal government's jurisdiction. Except energy and power shortage, Punjab is doing much better than all provinces and this miracle happened only due to great and capable leadership of Mian Shehbaz Sharif. If there is anyone better leader then please mention his name?
This is useless noise being made, it will get them nowhere and they know this.
PTI friends must use their brains and not rely on intellect of IK only. Resigning from assemblies will clear all hurdles in way of PPP to create ethnicity based provinces, appoint their own choice election commissioner and corrupting the whole elections process. Do you really want this and face another 5 years of darkness?
You are my leader Mr. Shahbaz Sharif :)
The PTI supporter who are asking PML N to resign, should ask leghari brother to resign first. mian saab keep doing good work you are doing
@shoaib: Why don't PTI trolls focus on asking PPP to resign???
What is the logic in asking PML N to resign???
Open letter to PML N:
Dear Nawaz, Please focus on your mandate in Punjab. You have made some key mistakes , which are hurting Punjab.
The first problem is the 18th amendment that was signed. Why did PML N sign for inequitable distribution of energy ???? Why don't you do homework before singing anti-Punjab legislation.
ANP does not care about Pakistan , the care about KPK and Greater Pukhtoonkhwa , MQM is an ethnic party , PPP looks to play the Sindh card ( at the cost of Punjab). Where is the party that must ensure Pubjabi rights???
Punjabis are in majority but we are treated like a minority in our own country . PML N signs away our due share of NFC award and this hurts the poor Punjabi populations.
I want PML N to continue be a class above the petty ethnic politics but this does not mean that we ignore Punjabi rights at every forum.
Now Seriki Subha is a ploy by Gilani to bifurcate Punjab although there is no genuine movement . No rally above 1000 have come out for this movement . But again we see PML N acquising and passing an overnight resolution for dividing Punjab in the provincial assembly. This was without consulting us Punjabis and very strange and sudden move ,
PML N has shown that it does not give a damn for Punjab... If Punjab is divided under your watch, you will not be forgiven. Punjabis have suffered enough!!!!
@Ch Allah Daad: you are seriously delusional. Protest for what? Has PML-N not being in power for at least 4 years in Punjab? Protest against who? themselves for not doing anything?? You should know Karachi is doing better as far as electricity is concerned, if Karachi can do it why not Lahore at least? (don't tell me Karachi gets all the resources) Making fools of the fools once again and you are one of them! Happy to see people not take khadam-e-aala's statements seriously, such is his credibility outside the circle of the delusional including you my friend.
@Owais: Dear voter lists are incomplete - Election Commisioner hasnt yet been appointed why do u want them to resign. resigning will only make PPP appoint person of their choice. PTI/Jamat e Islami agree with the PML N nominations...
Mr. CM, in 4 years, how much the punjab govt has added to provincial grid? I guess u are allowed to produce electricity at provincial level. Who's stopping you?
There is no need to continue wearing black bands. In order to show solidarity with the common man, Shahbaz Sharif should stop using electricity whether supplied by WAPDA or generators.
Will continue protest till thieves are not chained: Shahbaz Sharif
Well, Thieves are 'Not Chained' now.
This is what you want.
So, why protest?
Wah; "Kettle calling the Pot black." CM Saheb, Hammam mein sab nange hain including you the Sharif Brothers. None of the leaders since the inception of my nation has ever produced good governance and put the nation before the self.
and this coming from the so called champions of democracy - touche'....!!!
Is Mr Shahbaz Sharif, getting hysterical ? He says, he will wear a black band until the thieves are chained. The black band on Mr Sharif's arm , looks more like a chain around Mr Shahbaz Sharif to me.
No problem, we have nuclear weapons, missiles, religious intolerants, masjids, lot of beards, burqas, jirgas, best army, ISI, all weather friends etc. etc.
@ A2Z, Is it PML(N)'s fault that federal government has survived four years in office? PML(N) did its best since day one to get rid of this corrupt government. It was Establishment and its newly created puppet which was not ready for change. They didn't want to see PML(N) in power. They can live with this corrupt government but cannot tolerate PML(N). Its a fact..
lolxx..Shehbaz Sharif doing for getting vote , because their popularity in Punjab is going to end day by day due to Imran khan. I think their protest is meaning less, because in 18 amendment which was done on 2010 Province can make own power but Punjab Government do nothing for Power in Punjab . Now they they blaming to others why they not see their Government Progress , which Department is working well, lots of corruption, mismanagement is same like Federal Government. If PPP starts Protest against Punjab corruption then will happen. They are Doing just topi drama and Media is showing this a brilliant show. They are making people fool again, Loadsheding is from 4 years why they not wear black ribbon from four years??
Chor machai shor, it is true for you sir, what have you done in punjab , in what sense youe throw away billions of rupees and who engulf billion of rupees from your sasti rooti, lap top loot.................................. what you have done to genrate electricity after 18th amendment now you can also produce and why you signed on this amendment.were you not aware of the responsibility of this amendment---------------
can someone tell mr sharif that pakistani people are not that stupid:) u enjoy your four years and just now u r doing this drama! it's just because u have to go to people again and ask vote.....
Will wear black ribbon given by a PIR till looters(sharifs excluded)have chains around their necks. Will stand by the people of the country till last drop of blood if voted into power and if don't make an exit under deals. Zardari must repatriate billions of dlrs from Switzerland to qualify for exemption we have for fortunes in the UK and Dubai. Written off loans over nine billions per party must be recovered.
They are thieves and you are thieves too. What is the difference? Big portion of Punjab is facing worse situation. It has not improved in last four years either. Is there any change in thana system, health, education, sanitation.............. Don't fool people again.
CM Please take action and stop empty rhetorical speeches.People are not impressed with slogans but want results.People are committing suicide because of worsening economic conditions whereas Khadam-e-ala go abroad for even minor medical check-ups.Is it not an open contradiction.
Sto fooling us.
PML N Protesting against their own Government in Punjab?
@Pakistan politics: Mate, the existing distribution needs to be equitable. Punjab hittgerto gave all its taxpayers money for national projects.
Why can't the PPP distribute equitably??? Because of the circular debt issue mismanaged by Hafeez Shaikh .
Charity begins at home Mr. CM so how about all the chor(s) in your government? why dont you set the precedence.
Ohh The Black Ribbon !! Now Every thing will become normal ...
What kind of Childish thing is this??
Please resign from national assemblies and punjab assembly! this corrupt and inept govt. will fall by itself.
But you can only TALK.
We neither want democracy or electricity. We want only defence and security.
People want Khilafah.... Because only Khilafah will give electricity by taking back the right of producing electricity from IPPs which have caused this whole crisis.... According to Islamic law anything which is the need of community cannot be given in private hands....
@Ch. Allah Dad What type of protests are you talking about? Now you want your lovely PML-N to go out on the streets and protest against a govt who will stay in the office for next couple of months only. This govt is sucking blood of Pakistanis for the last 4 years but PML-N couldn't break their love affair with PPP but now elections are coming so you want protests. Shame on you hypocrites....
PMLN must not resign from the asseblies till this assembly is disolved, dont need to pay attetion to establishment stooges like imran khan, he has no chance to win even a single seat other than his own mianwali seat in punjab.
@Sameer: For your kind information:
PML-N is acting just like Maulana Fazalul Rehman, who used similarly lame excuses to dodge resignations during Musharraf's re-election
PML-N has already passed a resolution for the division of Punjab. If it backtracks now, like on most other issues, it will be annihilated from the Southern Punjab as well as Bahawalpur.
<<<"Don’t be childish. They resign and then what??? A free reign to the convict’s government???">>>> @Blithe Yeah!, As if they don't have free reign now !!
For some other person, this will be a new low. But for Mr. Shahbaz Sharif aka Pakistani Charles Sobhraj, this is just a new middle. Sir! Your incompetence is behind the energy crisis in Punjab. Don't blame others. You surrendered its rights in the council of common interests. Stop whining, start generating electricity in your province, ask provincial departments to pay their electricity dues, and don't count on Sindh's tax revenues (70%) for running your government.
Punjab should start producing its own electricity, CM stop wasting time
PTI want PMLN to resign so PPP will get a two third majority and the next day PPP will divide Punjab instantly and will pass every legislation of their choice in the parliament then . PMLN should never resign from the parliament.
That was obviously coming. PML-N, and its rightist supporters never believed in democracy/judiciary/institutions. They have, and will continue to side with the devil when it comes to the PPP. It is their mindset that they think they know what the poor people want, who on the other hand, have always continued to reject their love/complicity in martial laws, terrorism, and ideology of hate and plunder. People will reject these extremists again. Sloganeering will not take Mr. Charles Sobhraj of Pakistan anywhere.
Majority of the 15 comments submitted so far, have made a joke of his statement, which shows clearly how serious people take his words.
PPP has proved the truth about their own slogan, "Democracy is the best revenge".
Its time to protest and get rid of this corrupt government. All opposition parties should join hands. Mr. Tsunami, please don't boycott these protests..
Why doesn't your party resign from the assembly's so they can call early elections. You think the people of this poor country are dumb and stupid to fall for your empty slogans. Enough is enough we are sick of both you corrupt parties. We want change now.
That has to be one of the worst slogans ever.
In my view, Shahbaz sharif should take over the leadership of PMLN , that would be good for the country and the party.
I am proud of you Shahbaz sharif.
hahaha finally the golden words, WE DONT want democracy, we want electricity, but i agree too little too late sir, you had a ball the whole time and now when its time to go anyways youa re trying to act as part of the people, what rubbish.
Now when the election is near....khadem-e-aala is thinking of leaving the government in protest ....yes, fooling the fools once again...if you were so concerned why didn't you do anything earlier?? another cheap publicity stunt with no substance!
i believe he was aslep from the last 4 years ... sadd...elections r cmn close nd evry1 seems 2 b 2 woried about the ppl in pak
we all know this sir but can u guys do it i have a idea make it kalabag dam but released water should go sindh agri land dont turns it to faujis lands....
yes democracy cannot be alternate of electricity. shehbaz is right
@aliza awais: Don't be childish. They resign and then what??? A free reign to the convict's government???
Confessions of the Politician. People are fedup with democracy. Democracy has failed in Pakistan. Some one has to scale over article 6 and save Pakistan.
hahaha what a joke, this is the same man who use to say even worst democracy is better than good governance under Marshal Law. Hyprocrates!!!!
The problem with PML N is that they have ignored Punjab for the sake of Pakistan - be it the NFC, the 18th Amendment, etc .
Now if they go ahead with the PPP idea of dividing Punjab , PML N will be dead in the water.
Why can't we have both like in other civilized countries?
Why r u part of a govt which is not allowing u to deliver ur manifesto. Resign !!!
CM sahab!!!If you are so much worried about the Nation of Pakistan, then Why Don't you resign from Assemblies????
It's high time this tough stand was taken against the convict's government that is hellbent on destroying Punjab.
Shahbaz needs to take a stand agaibst the division of Punjab. There is no genuine movement in South Punjab . Don't fall into the PPP trap - this time nobody will forgive you.
Most of the people will agree with him in this case. The poor have nothing to do with democracy and they dont need such type of democracy which it is taking revenge from them.
