Dr Shakil Afridi was jailed last week for 33 years for treason and the Obama administration has come under steady criticism for its handling of his case.
US officials said the resettlement offer for Afridi came about the time of the May 1, 2011, raid in which US Navy SEAL commandos killed the al Qaeda leader at his complex in Abbottabad.
They indicated that Afridi's family would have been welcome to leave Pakistan with him as part of the resettlement plan. The officials said he rejected the offer for reasons that are unclear.
Afridi was accused of running a fake vaccination campaign in Abbottabad and used cheek swabs to try to gather DNA from bin Laden's children to confirm the identity of those living in the compound.
The DNA effort ultimately did not succeed but US sources told Reuters he helped American operatives locate and follow the bin Laden courier who led them to the Abbottabad hideout.
The offer for Afridi to leave Pakistan was confirmed independently by two US officials. The White House and State Department declined comment on the matter.
Afridi's case has damaged US-Pakistan relations with outraged US senators voting last week to cut aid to Pakistan by $33 million - $1 million for each year of the doctor's prison sentence.
Pakistan said Washington should respect its court's decision.
Post-raid arrest
Local authorities arrested Afridi several weeks after the bin Laden raid. In the intervening period, US authorities believed they would have had ample time to get him out of the country if he had wanted to leave.
"Before he was arrested, Doctor Afridi was offered opportunities to leave Pakistan with his family but he turned those down," one of the US officials said.
"Some may question why he did this but no one, including the doctor, could have foreseen that Pakistan would punish so severely someone whose work benefited the country so much," the official said. Another official said it was not usual for people in Afridi's situation to reject resettlement offers.
The official said Afridi may have believed that rather than becoming the object of character attacks and accusations of treason by Pakistani authorities, he might instead have won praise for his role in helping rid Pakistan of a threat to its security and stability.
Afridi's brother Jamil has described the treason charges as baseless and said the doctor was being made a scapegoat.
"If my brother had done something wrong, he had a valid US visa. He could have fled the country," Jamil said after the sentence was handed down, adding that the family had received no offers of help from the US government.

There you go - Spy in your country, run fake medicine campaigns and win US residency!
My questions to those calling him a traitor 1) Is Pakistan NOT against war on terror? 2) Was Osama NOT a terrorist? 3) Are Pakistan and US NOT allies on war on terror and don't we collaborate on other intelligence issues? 4) Why we don't shoot down the drones 5) Given all above, HOW is Afridi a traitor?? Please explain with rational answers not pointless sentimental talk. Thank you.
American propaganda!
Dr. Afridi was heiping the international community as well as to those Pakistani who considered that elimination of OBL is a must for the world peace and the peace in the region . He may be a tretor for terrorists and their supporters but now he is a Hero for the international community .
silly boy
Awwww really ? he is lucky enough not to awarded a death sentence.
It only proves that the man was mentally unbalanced. But then, that is true of the whole country!
A son of the soil betrayed by its own country.
Prophet Mohammed once said, "One who spills even a drop of blood of an innocent, is a threat to humanity and mankind". And this man is punished for helping to annihilate one of the the worst human beings on the planet.
Where is his family???
Afridi’s carmines are against humanity, human basic rights and privacy he is/was not reliable, trustworthy man. He should be hanged up to save the nation, human rights, family right, honor of the honorable tribes their traditions and culture and country…. His first crime by running fake vaccination campaign…hence people not any interested to do their kids vaccination now..his Highly damaged the human welfare that probably might leads countless children getting effected from various health problem further he provided base for any type of corruption. Second he did dishonesty with his profession and his code of conduct.….hence people not any more believing any doctor….Third is traitor who acted/crimes against the law of the land both ethically, society wise and with nation. Fourth as certain type of people born a century as a hero or as a big traitor…so he get recognized himself specially and Afridi’s nation particularly as shame for Pashtun nation. The matter is not that of OBL but the matter is the human basic privacy, honor of society, law of the country and tribal belt. Further it also prove that USA is highly unreliable, dishonest and untrustworthy as friend or as world companion…Who can use any shape to achieve he objective without any concern with International community, diversity, law of the country and humanity.
Which means his mindset was that of helping Pakistan, too. Anyone trying to deny it should ask themselves what they'd do if they were intentionally betraying the country. Your answer would probably be to get yourself and your family out as quick as possible.
Why should we believe these liars?
Did they speak a true word regarding us ever before?
Such a great man, we should issue a postal stamp in his name and name the Qaddafi Stadium after him.
Well maybe the doctor thought his "MASTERS" won't allow any harm come to him.....seems he was wrong
is it a war against terrorism or war against Pakistan??
“Before he was arrested, Doctor Afridi was offered opportunities to leave Pakistan with his family but he turned those down,” one of the US officials said."
Why Pakistan government was not involved in any of your action when this action was against the sovereignty of Pakistan
At least this happened in a tribal court.
A similar spectacle had happened decades earlier in the PAK Courts and PAK people rejoiced when they hung their PM.
Now they are trying very hard to erase that from the history.
Reasonable assumption that would have worked in any other country on the planet.
Propaganda piece to show Afridi in good light.
