FAISALABAD:

Excessive electricity load-shedding has forced the shutdown of more than 200,000 power looms in the city, causing unemployment and loss to the national economy, say industry people.

“Half of power loom factories have been closed. If this situation continues, the remaining units will also be shut down, rendering millions of workers jobless,” warned Waheed Khaliq Ramay, Chairman of Council of Loom Owners Association, while talking to the media here on Monday.

He pointed out that the government was collecting fuel adjustment charges from the industry in electricity bills, but power shortage had not been reduced even by 1%.

Ramay said the government was making claims that it had eliminated forced, unscheduled and unprecedented load-shedding, but the situation was still the same due to which the industrial sector, especially power looms, were being affected badly.

In spite of charging fuel adjustment surcharge, the power loom industry was still experiencing six hours of outages every day because of which one shift of workers had been affected badly, he said.

He asked the government to impose industrial emergency instead of spending on foreign trips.
