KARACHI:

The National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) employees were greeted with water cannons and tear gas grenades by the police as they tried to enter the red zone near the Karachi Press Club on Monday.

Abdul Ghaffar Kathio, Ashok, Mujeebur Rehman, Ghulam Nabi and Visho Mal were arrested, while Khadim Baladi, Murtaza and Ashfaque Zaunr were injured as NCHD employees from 23 districts in the province marched towards the Chief Minister House.  “We want to meet Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah as only he could take serious steps to address our grievances,” said Ashfaque Memon.

The NCHD employees have been demanding permanent jobs and tried to enter the red zone, where the Chief Minister and Governor Houses are located, seven times in the past, with no success. They tried to march towards the Bilawal House on March 27, but were thwarted by the police.

NCHD provincial action committee chairman Mohammad Daim Janwari said that federal minister Khursheed Shah had promised NCHD employees of Sindh that he would provide them permanent jobs.
