If governance was the PPP’s priority, its voters would not have to witness 18 hours of loadshedding despite four-and-half years of claims promising otherwise. Furthermore, inflation would not be in double digits, the government would have shown concern over large chunks of Pakistan’s textile sector shifting to Bangladesh and, hence, causing unemployment, Karachi would not be burning, the GDP growth target (despite being very low) would not have been missed and the government would have come up with a strategy to curtail the phenomenal budget deficit and stopped printing money to meet its expenditure. Isn’t all this enough to show that governance has never been a priority for this PPP-led government?
If it was, its promises of 24 hours of electricity by December 31, 2009 would have been met. Has any government in Pakistan’s 64-year history changed four governors for the State Bank as well as four finance ministers? The Pakistan Railways situation keeps deteriorating but the railway minister sits comfortably. Certain figures are still in power despite corruption charges, our national airline currently suffers its worst annual losses and, finally, we have a prime minister who says that he was congratulated more on being convicted by the Supreme Court than on becoming prime minister.
With this state of affairs, the PPP is doing exactly what it should do to contest the next elections. In the past, the PPP was victimised by the establishment and, hence, always plays the victim card. Benazir Bhutto’s assassination created an environment in the 2008 elections that allowed the party to cash in on a sympathy vote. However, the PPP was neither able to deliver good governance or keep its promise of bringing Benazir’s assassins to justice. So, in addition to the above victim cards, the party has invented a new one by not implementing the Supreme Court’s judgments and politicising the Court. The judiciary has also helped by not taking up cases across the board and giving the PPP an opportunity to build an impression of one-sided accountability.
Coupled with this victim card is the demand for a southern Punjab province. It was never on the PPP’s agenda until March 2011 when the prime minister said: “The formation of a Seraiki province will be a part of the PPP manifesto for the next elections”. However, the PPP is bent on making a new province in this tenure to capitalise on south Punjab’s vote bank and on its grievances with the current Punjab government. Resolutions in the National and Punjab assembly have also been passed in this regard.
So, get ready for the next elections where the PPP will play its victim card and, this time, it is not against its traditional foe establishment but someone newer by the dynamic name of the judiciary. Little wonder, that the election campaign will be led by none other than Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.

What's wrong to play 'victim's card'. This is politics. The people who vote for them should be smart enough to understand that every time a party comes asking for vote is making a fool out of them. If the voter is that stupid.....the party has every right to fool them....and as far as performance is concerned...who by the way has a track record of good governance and deliverable in this land of the pure.....relax and fasten your seat belt....ppp and its coalition partners are again coming to power in the next election may be with a slight less no of seats...give credit to zardari how he has played politics....his biggest opponents....pmln and pti pitted against each other.....nothing is going to change in this country.....my suggestion is start looking for a canadain immigration.....because we have to do it anyway after 5 years.
@Maryam PPP cannot be party of poor masses when inflation grows. It is the party of hunger and hungry masses! http://dawn.com/2012/05/09/the-hunger-games-in-pakistan/ The Hunger Games in Pakistan
Why has textile moved to Bangladesh? They should have moved to China, that's where Indian manufacturers are leaving also after being fed up by load shedding.
@jibran:No it's not new, entire history of PPP Governments riddled with this, nothing new ,nonewhatsoever.
I will vote for PPP because due to its political reforms it strengthen the federation which otherwise was dismantling. Now why Establishment & Judiciary make PPP a victim, always? The answer is obvious because PPP is the party of the poor massess.
There is a common cure for all this. Leave PPP and join PTI. It is time to give someone else a chance. A party that does not care about your ethnicity. You are a Pakistani. That's it.
I m totally agree with Mr Shazeeb who is the best anchor and writer of our country. His analysis of over all PPP behavior is correct
@Naeem Siddiqui:When they don't watch TV and don't read paper how do they know SC is being Partial?? Answer : whatever their Murshed saeen tells them. It's blind faith which is as much a curse as mullah faith.
@Shahzeb Khanzada
You are contributing nothing new, most of the media and so called intellectuals are doing this PPP bashing day and night, you need to understand that neither PPP’s voters’ watch talk shows nor they read ET :)
And if Pakistan's judiciary keep giving anti-PPP verdicts and keep putting the cases of Nawaz, religious extremists and Army's cases in back burner; I bet PPP is certainly gonna win next election :)
Zardari Khape, Zardari Khape : ) LoL
Next general elections would be first in Pakistan's history based on the full tenure of ruling party/coaliation.
It is premature to conclude that PPP will be able to play its victim card successfully. Would people accept victim's plea from those ruling for 5 years?
In the past, no party had the opportunity to go back to people with a full tenure.
It is a very good article. People should open their eyes now and they should no more vote for PPP. Sindhi people were the main victims. PPP gave nothing to Sindh. Going forward, Sindh should not vote for PPP. In my opinion, PML(N) is a better option for Sindhi people.
Lets see PPP playing the victim and South Punjab card, PMLN unbelievably playing the Sind card, MQM playing the muhajir Subah card, ANP playing as always Pukhtunkhwa card. SIndhi nationalists talking about sons of the soil, Baloch nationalists talking independence, religious parties as always being religious. Seems like PTI is the only party talking about Pakistan right now so i suppose thats where we should head now.
It is a well-written article. People should be aware about how PPP plays with them. PPP is playing this game since many years. PPP failed to deliver in all its tenures. There was corruption in all its tenures.
that true but i little bit disagree with shazeab......
No more vote for PPP because PPP is the other name of corruption.
Very well written article. But also it the time that the media gives up its defeatest approach and give some hope to the people. You could have said that the victim card wont work for long now as people are more aware due to media explosion.
PPP is very good at forming a governments but abjectly poor at running them.
A very good piece. One only hopes that the PPP does get rejected in the next election, because otherwise, the unhappy middle class and urban poor will have no choice but to take matters to the streets
@Mirza: Electricity is not only required to run little leisure time gadgets. It is required to run factories and mills so laborers can get work and take home some food to eat.
We vote PPP for the ideology! Cheers
The judiciary has also helped by not taking up cases across the board and giving the PPP an opportunity to build an impression of one-sided accountability.
That's why i have started hating this judiciary. Why dont they take up cases against Sharif's, punjab govt and MQM...
WE WANT JUSTICE ACROSS THE BOARD
The PPP's victim card betrays contempt for the intelligence of the PPP voter. The PPP does not talk about the merit of the legal cases against them, but attempts to substitute that with historical wrongs of the judiciary so as to try and dis-credit it. The PM says he is upholding the constitution, conveniently forgetting that the constitution is only what the court says it is and nothing besides.
Although we can agree to writer's opinion, when it comes to Government's performance during the last 4 and a half years but blaming PPP for playing a victim's card to win elections is too much to agree with. It also reflects on writer's superficial knowledge of our poltical history and its multi dimensional aspects. PPP has governed this country in the most difficult times of our history i.e post 1971, Post Zia and Post Musharaf eras. In spite of all the challenges, PPP has lots many accomplishments under it's belt. Its true that PPP has always found the "deep state" and its "agents" trying to destabilize its governments but they have been able to take difficult decisions in the long term interest of the nation during all the tenures. Nuclear program, 1973 Constitutions, Heavy Mechanical Complex, 18th amendment, NFC award and Benazir Income Support programs are just few examples of PPP's performance.
therefore the conclusion is solution to pakistani problems in only mushrraf
you are a very bold anchor and extremely un-biased. same reflects in this article. this is so true what you have stated here.
Excellent article ! i totally agree. despite all of us knowing all this, nobody can do anything. its time for people to come out on the streets.
PPP will use its own cards plus the jokers with them, MQM ,& ANP, & PML, for the up coming elections .Why we target only PPP ,where as all their partners are equally responsible for what they have done to the Pakistan people , including PMLN.so they all will use their cards and rule us again......
Deja vu of 19977 Another alliance of rightest forces, again protest on the roades in the name rigging, simply they can't defeat PPP.
@umer: You said "ppp will win the next elections all other parties will protest hence MARTIAL LAW.." I hate to agree with you but it seems likely just like what the rightwing alliance did against ZAB. Contrary to the Op Ed, PPP has been victimized by the judiciary all along and this would not be a new card. Zia did not hang ZAB, the SC judges did. Each time the courts and generals went against PPP, the nation elected PPP again and again. The next elections would be no exception. TV, AC, Internet, PC and other toys need more and more power and urban elite are very unhappy with lack of electricity, the rising price of gold and petroleum, to name a few. The large majority of Pakistan lives in the rural heartland and they do not have these things and they do not care about these issues. For the silent majority bread (they cannot think of butter) is the basic issue and the rest is trivial. In short when a policy or card is working for PPP, why change it now? Regards, Mirza
We all know what the word 'Baisharam' means. We all know what the word 'BEGHAIRAT' means. Now, there's a whole new word 'PPP'!
Pp promotes democracy and liberty bystanding of just useing Vitimization card..Whereas vitimization is the matter of fact, because this is the only party which has ever tackled for the rights of common people with such a capacity of being forthright..
ppp will win the next elections all other parties will protest hence MARTIAL LAW.. FTW :D
Good summary Shahzeb. I personally think hadn't Army taken over and interrupted the democratic process in Pakistan, PPP's current cadre would have been wiped out from the political landscape long time ago. Only time will tell, but this time around, even the victim card won't work, because there is a bigger victim hood card of Sindhi nationalism and Muhajir province that is beginning to work against them.
Very true Shahzeb. Big fan of your show as well. The rural voters blinded by and self bound by traditional biradri culture (along with the beneficiaries of PPP's loot and enjoy policies) are the only ones who support the PPP. You (rightly) keep a neutral stand in your show allowing the political combatants to answer tough questions and argue it out but op-eds allow you to reveal your thoughts. Please write in urdu newspapers as well, our masses read them and they need to hear the truth on many of the issues which they remain ignorant of.
A good article. In my view Pakistan is still in initial stages of democracy and in the coming years our people will learn that It is the performance that matters when choosing someone in elections rather than emotionalism. The politics of Pakistan is the second name of Opportunism at present and I am optimistic it will change in future.
Ethnic cards being played by the ruling party are a very sensitive matter.PPP should realise that in order to gain votes they are creating hatred amongst the differenct ethnicities living in pakistan. Is staying in power so attractive that they are willing to break up the country for it.What good will it do pakistan if it's broken up into small pieces defined solely on the basis of race.
Sadly, the ppp is using racial cards to gain votes for the next elections. It has been trying its best to divide punjab by any means possible. It hopes to gain votes for the next elections by telling its voters that look we have divided up punjab, this is our grand achievement.Exploiting the emotions of the public to gain sympathy for one's self is an old strategy, unfortunately by playing the Sindh card ppp weakens pakistan.
