ISLAMABAD:

About 79% of 2,408 water samples sourced from areas in Northern and Central Punjab were found to be contaminated with germs and unsuitable for drinking. These samples were collected from various government-maintained water supply schemes.

These schemes are providing piped water for drinking purposes to households for multiple uses including drinking.

Not all of the 19.017 million people living in these areas are covered, with nearly 61% without access to water from these schemes. People with access to these schemes pay about Rs64 per month.

PCRWR Chairman Dr Muhammad Aslam Tahir said lack of proper management, operation and maintenance of water supply systems is one of the critical issues affecting these schemes.
