Mashkoor Raza: The art of life

LAHORE:

Abstract impressionism is what painter Mashkoor Raza knows best. Even though he has experimented with calligraphy, nothing matches the cult following his impressionist work has garnered. Raza’s work is extremely accessible, not to mention affordable, which makes it an ideal adornment for almost any setting and not just a far-fetched dream for art lovers. The painter recently displayed 50 canvases at Revivers Galleria in Lahore on May 14 and along with his artwork, launched his coffee table book as well.

The Karachi-based artist shares his thoughts regarding his new book, saying, “This book takes the reader through my experiences as an artist and compiles my most important work from when I started my journey in 1972 till 2012.” Raza, who never thought that he could ever have a book to his credit, adds, “I always wanted a book to my name because paintings go away but books are forever. It is generally the responsibility of the government to compile such books but since our government fails to take notice, I financed the book myself.”

Art columnist and critic Nadeem Zuberi is the author of this one of a kind compilation. He has been proactive in keeping the readers updated with the dynamic trends in the art world and has become a source of meaningful evaluation for collectors.

Punjab Education Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman was the chief guest at the event and inaugurated the exhibition and launched the book. Even though he did not seem to know much about art or about the artist, he still shares some generic words of praise regarding Raza’s work, “Pakistan is full of talented people and we take much pride in appreciating their work.”

Sara Anjum, owner of Revivers Galleria shares her thoughts, “I am very selective in choosing the art work that I exhibit. I am a trained painter myself hence I have a keen eye for good art. Mashkoor Raza’s work is sought-after and appreciated amongst all communities.”

After congratulating Raza on the positive response on his exhibition and the launch of his book, Anjum adds, “This book is very important because it educates us not only regarding the works of the artist but maps out his entire timeline and journey. The book will be available exclusively at Revivers Galleria for Rs3,000.”
