Hillary Clinton began her passage to India in West Bengal where a vibrant public opinion vociferously resists American penetration of the Indian economy, particularly in the consumer domain. The end of the 34-year-long reign of the Left there does provide an opportune moment to reassure the Mamata Bannerji government that Western companies do not plan to bring back the era of colonial exploitation in the garb of globalisation and that this eastern state was an appropriate new destination for Western investment, profitable for all the parties. What struck Pakistani observers as rather gratuitous was that she seized the first opportunity to declare that Pakistan had not done as much to fight terrorism as desired by Washington and New Delhi. When she persisted with this and related themes in her further progress in India, right up to the joint media briefing in New Delhi, Pakistan felt that it was more than gratuitous and that Clinton was reinviting India to join her in a new spell of coercive diplomacy directed against Pakistan. This was done at a time when the Pakistani leadership was working overtime to find ways of meeting American demands on the reopening of Pakistani transit facilities for Nato-Isaf forces in Afghanistan and also at a time when India and Pakistan were earnestly engaged in exploring trade as a possible game changer in their bilateral relations.
India’s legendary assertion of national sovereignty and (it would surprise Pakistani liberals) national honour is inscribed deeply in the American psyche. Clinton is no exception to the deference that Western interlocutors show while talking to the Indians. India did not rush to purchase nuclear reactors from American companies as the Indian lawmakers would not compromise on legislation on liability in case of mishaps. India swept aside a vigorous American campaign to bag the huge order for advanced fighter jets. Washington, like other capitals in the West, felt unhappy at India’s spat with Vodafone. New Delhi has followed its national interest in meeting Washington’s demands to curtail economic ties with Iran; it can safely claim that it has reduced imports of Iranian oil to diversify sources of energy and not because of US pressure. Iran rewarded India by agreeing that 45 per cent of payment is made in Indian rupees. There is a huge pile of rupees now that Iran must use on enhanced imports from India, a compulsion which may hurt potential Pakistani exporters to Iran. Clinton worked on all these issues softly and diplomatically and even added public praise for some reduction of oil import from Iran. References to Pakistan were insensitive as they paid little attention to the 35,000 Pakistani dead; worse still Clinton claimed that Ayman al Zawahiri was in Pakistan.
Bitter as it is, it should not stop Pakistani efforts to work out a viable and sustainable relationship with the United States. It is in Pakistan’s interest not to be provoked. It should also continue to look at the larger picture — US, India, China, Russia, Iran and, above all, Afghanistan — inclusively, steadily and as a whole. Parliament wanted Pakistan’s options to be enlarged. But has the executive regained freedom of manoeuvre to do so? Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar reportedly says that transit depends on an American apology for the Salala atrocity. Washington responds by proposing exceptionally harsh conditions on future cooperation with Pakistan. It reconfirms the basic approach: in India, America would lobby; in Pakistan, it would simply coerce. What Khar owes the nation is a statement to parliament on the outcome of her efforts to broaden the ambit of Pakistan’s foreign policy as desired by it.

A country flaunting it cadavers is seeking sympathy and not honour. Besides, how many of these were killed by Pakistani jihadi national assets?
A Flawed double dealing Foriegn Policy which is based on terrorists being used as " Strategic Assets", against the world, AND lying to the USA, deserves condemnation and disgust by all. That is why Pakistan is being humiliated and isolated by the world. there is no room for niceties and diplomacy for such Nations. Pakistan is learning fast, and thats why everyone is trying to make peace with India. Nukes and kashmir [policy have ruined Pakistan. better learn fast or face anarchic conditions, of which power riots are just the begining.
Polpot
OBL's presence in Pakistan was never proven! You Indians blame Pakistan just because Obama announced OBL's 'killing' in Pakistan in a desperate bid to boost his own re-election chances. How do you know he had not been killed long ago as President Pervez Musharraf had been repeatedly pleading to the World? Is it at all fair to believe Obama and not President Musharraf who has a reputation for being a liberal and telling the truth?
Mrs Clinton has also in the past made insensitive remarks that OBL was in Pakistan...... ooops...she was right.
Imperialistic American.
@kaalchakra:
When will you get it that Nukes don't matter. Its the Economy!
Combine this with India's soft power, you have a lethal combination.
@Kailash: You are right. Pakistan has benefited from the generosity of the US almost since independence. Americans supplied arms and gave billions of dollars to Pakistan when India was a non-aligned nation. What has Pakistan has done in return? It has lied and worked against US interests. Every time questions are raised we hear that in the war against terrorism a very large number of Pakistani citizens have died. These deaths would have not occurred if Pakistan had not allowed terrorists to use Pakistan as a safe haven. That is why the western nations seem reluctant to give more money to Pakistan.
It must have been amply noted that when Indians tested Agni-III...its has done with Pakistan.. The hidden message is that Pakistan has been taken care off ... and Indians are looking to further there aspirations.. Pakistans Nuclear boogy wont work hence forth.. !!!
Pakistanis, since November 2011 have been negotiating the dollars that they want USA to cough up while using the excuse of so-called apology from USA. You can label it whatever you want, for example, customs, freight, insurance, transit, road, blud or water money, it is the much desired money without which Pakistan cannot run its military and bureaucratic machine.
After all the goose that used to give golden eggs is gone and Pakistan is bankrupt more so since its recent default on IPP payments.
The reason why Pakistan is coerced and India is persuaded by the United States is very simple; Pakistan for the last 60 years has been a recepient of US economic and military largesse. Therefore, as it happens in life, when we extend our arms to take money, we lose our self respect and along with the money we get a complimentary kick in the back. That my friends is exactly what US is doing to Pakistan.
What's she going to say? That she's sorry Pakistan's jihadi policies and strategic depth resulted in the death of Pakistanis?

If what Abbas writes is true then India seem to already quite careful around the US. Is Abbas wrong?
Whatever, India too seems to be a society of honor and ghairat. So no reason for India-loving Pakistanis to advise Pakistan to give up the path of honor and ghairat.
I do understand that Muslims in general hate west/USA and more so in case of Pakistan. Well I am in USA for last 7 yrs and I can guarantee that it's best place to love for anybody including muslims. Ask any economist, they will vouch for better relation with US. For e.g. Look at Japan, south Korea, china and to some extent India. The success of their economies are to a very very large extent because of US's market. So suck up ur imaginary idea of great race/people in the world and get real. India is not growing to its potential because It has not reached to a stage where china is able to use US know how through fDI. Pakistan can only profit from a better relation with US rather than any other country including Saudi Arabia , china or India.
Stop hating USA for ir own good!
Pakistan is NOT India in destiny, values and tolerance. The sooner Pakistani society realises this better for its own people. Just because you have some culture that resembles India, you do not compare to India. US is the first country that has shown Pakistanis their real position in global community-no wonder this hurts. @Kallchakra--you do not get respect because you are nuclear-commonsense!!
India’s legendary assertion of national sovereignty and (it would surprise Pakistani liberals) national honour is inscribed deeply in the American psyche. Clinton is no exception to the deference that Western interlocutors show while talking to the Indians.
Though it's really surprising for me as a Pakistani Liberal, I agree with as you explained India didn't rush to purchase nuclear reactors, fighter jets from American companies. Also Vodafone case and Iran relations.
Hope things will change and world powers will treat us as respected nation.
US has always been the catalysis for enmity between two largest neighbor of the subcontinent.Obviously present overtures of peace between them is becoming an eyesore for US. India understands it very well since in the past (pre-Bush era) always accused US of inciting Pakistan against India. I hope better senses prevail over here and our policy makers are not get carried away by accusations against Pakistan by Madam Hillary at every available opportunity during her visit to India. Sadly our policy makers have now got a tendency to get inflated at every adverse comments against Pakistan by the sole super power. It was evident from media coverage in India which got HILLARY MUSINGS against Pakistan. We must learn to behave as a very important power in Asia and ignore all the references against Pakistan since it indicates that even after having a vision of playing our just role in International affairs,we have an obession with our much smaller and weaker neighbor. Great powers think big and Pakistan is not that big to HAVE the centre stage of our foreign policy ...WE MUST BEWARE OF US and chose our path carefully and boldly
@kaalchakra:
After all, Pakistan is a NUCLEAR nation!
If we, Pakistan as a nation is to be promoted as a brand, the favorite punch line will be
'Eat, Drink, Poop Nuclear weapon.Cheers!!'
Tanvir Sahib,
Pakistan's establishment has been lying to us for so long and so much that it is nearly impossible to sort out the truth from lies. Can we move on from worrying about India and Indians? Hilary probably said it to make sure that we hear since we have not been hearing clearly for the last few decades. We play duplicitous games and constantly lie. So now the Americans are on to us and don't believe our lies any more. Is that so surprising? No one has told the Pakistani people clearly how Osama was living comfortably in Pakistan for so long. Do you think we nobody Pakistanis cannot figure that one out? Do you think the Americans have not figured that one out? Lets start telling the truth for once: we need America and American help to get out of the mess our leaders have put us in over the last 60 years. Please stop with the lies.
No nation has become great without throwing off the yoke of slavery to Americans. Let Pakistani nation send a clear signal that Pakistan has become independent. China, Iran, Cuba, Panama, North Korea - the list of Pakistan's current and potential friends and partners is unending. Why is Pakistan so afraid?! There is no need. Cut America down to size and deal with it as an equal. After all, Pakistan is a NUCLEAR nation!
