HARIPUR:

A boy was killed and his rescuer injured in a botched rescue attempt in a remote village of Ghazi tehsil on Thursday.

According to the police, Zaryab, a student of grade three, was playing in his school premises during recess hours when he fell into a 150-foot-deep well. The school administration requested a village local, Qaisar, to recue the injured boy. But as he carried him to the top, the rope by which the two were suspended ruptured and the two fell in, leaving the boy dead and the rescuer seriously injured. They were pulled out after a tireless two-hour attempt. Qaiser’s both legs were broken and he was shifted to a hospital in Islamabad.

The boy’s father, Ilyas, has held the school administration responsible for his son’s death. “The school had enough funds from its parent-teachers committee but the headmaster did not bother to use the money to cover up the well which had run dry several years ago”.

Circle in-charge of the education department, Abdul Wahab, initiated an inquiry into the incident and ordered the school administration to keep the institute closed for two days to mourn the boy’s death.
