As the US pressed Pakistan to do more to stamp out militancy, a top Pakistani military commander criticised Washington for having double standards and for seeking to make Islamabad a scapegoat for its failure to beat insurgency in Afghanistan.
American efforts to talk peace with insurgents in Afghanistan mean Washington can no longer expect Pakistan to attack all the militant factions on its side of the border, some of whom Islamabad is also reaching out to, Lt Gen Khalid Rabbani, the corps commander for Peshawar, told The Associated Press.
“Why do they raise their fingers toward Pakistan? It is shifting the blame on to others,” he said.
Lt Gen Rabbani defended the government’s dealings with North Waziristan-based militant commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur, who is believed to have signed a nonaggression pact with the government. “At the moment he seems to be trying to keep himself out of trouble.”
He said US and Nato were in contact with insurgents in Afghanistan to try and ‘co-opt them into the peace process’.
“Something has to be done, and it’s in the offing,” said Lt Gen Rabbani, who commands over 150,000 soldiers and paramilitary forces. “North Waziristan is the only region we haven’t cleared. It should be done as early as possible.”
Post-clashes scenario
An uneasy calm prevailed in North Waziristan after two days of fighting lefts scores of militants and security personnel dead in the region.
A jirga of tribal elders has intervened to get the fighting stopped. The jirga, headed by Maulvi Gul Rehman and Hafiz Noor Ali Shah, has met the political authorities on Tuesday. They were presented with demands of returning a military vehicle, rifles and bodies of soldiers.
The jirga will now convey the demands to the militants.
So far, the fighting has left 12 security personnel and 22 militants dead. This is other than civilian casualties.
Medics at the agency headquarters hospital in Miramshah told The Express Tribune that they had received over 100 wounded people – 16 of them were discharged after been given first aid.
Militants vow ‘jihad’
Masked militants, meanwhile, handed out copies of pamphlets pledging ‘jihad’ to mark the first anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden, albeit a week late.
“Let us pledge today that we will continue our jihad and sacrifice our lives and property in the way of Allah like Sheikh Osama did,” it said, unsigned and dated May 2, the anniversary of the Al-Qaeda leader’s killing by US troops. (Additional reporting by our correspondent in Miramshah)

Aren't you the one who pretends to be an Indian all the time? Even I feel like banging YOUR head over YOUR comment.
@pakistan: no our resources, finances, weaponry are no where near to the US/NATO. but if u think about it.. NATO AKA US have now decided to do talks with them. whats the worst case scenario if the talks go unsuccessful.. they go back to US.. millions of miles away frm Afghanistan. If Pakistan talks go unsuccessful.. we are right next to Afghanistan. We are in too deep now to pull out specially in waziristan. u think its easy for the soldiers in waziristan to spen years there, 1 day at a post there is like a year.. u have no 1 to talk to. u can't sleep coz they attack at anytime. not going into the political issues of y we went in there in the first place.. but now its too late to just pull out.. true that at the end this thing will only end with talks.. but wen is that time.. I think our Military knows better.
@Yaida M: the next question is who created the monster like OBL and used him against erstwhile USSR?
@ali: what is so wrong...i feel like banging my head over your comment.
Just one question to all the war mongers!
Why should we fight them when US/NATO has decided to talk to them?
Do we have better army than US/NATO? Do we have better economy than US/NATO? Do we have better weapons than US/NATO?
If US/NATO has gone to back-foot and is just trying to keep order while asking for negotiations, why do we have to be such a war-addict?
@CAT: no it is not a mis-quote. Sawat has been cleared and it's only Waziristan now where the taliban still reside.
@good decision: my statements look pro taliban to u?? ahhh. u have issues with understanding or sumthing??
@Moghees:
I might be only 1 out of 180 million. Do and go for a roadshow for election using the 'anti USA and anti India' and more of proving pro Taliban and I assure that you will will win the election. No rigging required.
Pakistan has to clear those safe heavens... Either perform or perish.. No other options have been left.
“North Waziristan is the only region we haven’t cleared. It should be done as early as possible.”
is this a mis-qoute?
@good decision. if u r referring to Gen Musharaf here, thn I myself am not a big fan of his neither i supported his decision. but i still luv our military. btw id be more thn happy for the PM spot. i can attach my cv if u r the concerned person.
@ShutupClinton: proof? Other than “US is saying it”
Abbottabad Commission: Can you please inform us (CIA/RW/Mossad/Santa Clause) what is about it and why has it commissioned by the Judicial.
@Batman: 'Lt Gen Rabbani defended the government’s dealings with North Waziristan-based Militant commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur'. Could you please bang your head and inform me the meaning of a 'militant'.
@Moghees: I might have the same views as you concerning the 9/11. My main grudge is why did the General, who's people love and fellow blindly take USA's version. Pakistan has a brilliant person like you, with full truth of 9/11 left in the cold. Time we elect you for President/PM/General. What say?
@ Vasan. id say read my comment again.. i dont see myself posting that research means interviewing the concernd sourcs and all.. in fact info from onli the media is anything but balanced.. wen i said research i meant from differnt sources and see all perspectives. u can rest ur case all u want.. but i thikn in 2012 a person still blaming taliban for the 9/11..needs to look at different perspectives and make a judgment call on whose right and whose wrong. (u dont even have to make a judment call, scientific facts r there to tell u what c4 does) nd ur statements are nothing but what the media states as facts so there is no need for acknowledgment. Secondly Pakistan playing a double role. us being an ally with the US was never an option it was a decision imposed on us by a super power. I was never in favor of that but never did I start blaming the military for this decision. Simply coz im no 1 to comment on it. My knowlede of whats happenin behind the closed doors is very limited in fact is 0. but im very hapy that finally we have openly pointed the finger at US. this was long due. and im sure if the time comes every Pakistani will be standing on the border to defend our country along with our Military. we have given 400,000 martyrs to this country and will give 400,000 more including ourselves if the time comes. @ Hunter: yes I am a Pakistani :)
@Moghees: Pakistan is indeed overtaken by delusions. Thats a perfect recipe for disaster and imploding. Unfortunately pakistan is isolated in world, and has complete trust deficit with the world. Even Arab brothers have no patience for pakistans antics. Sad to see how the US is finally putting pak in its place.
LOL! Seems he just woke up after deep sleep......
@Gritl
This is a sign of competence?!!?? I shudder to think what incompetence looks like...
All you rebellious clans bleating here in favor of our backbiter listen :
All these Jihadies ( NOW TALIBAN) were trained by U.S.A with the helping hand of Pakistan. After the defeat of S.U in 1992 , their were many pint-sized tribes in Afghanistan. All of them tried to take over Afghanistan , but Taliban tribe managed to get the power. So stop it now for God sake. Don`t make us scapegoat once again.
Moghees. Nobody is going to do any original research ie interviewing the concerned people, forensic studies, psycho analyzing and truth testing the victims etc. You read from one source and I from regular media. I think the regular media has more balanced coverage then the dubious ones you claim to have researched and found out. In my opinion they are headline seekers and nothing else. Thanks for acknowledging my statements as facts. There rests my case.
Inspite of the fact that OBL was found and killed at Abbotabad @vasan: proof? Other than "US is saying it"?
@hedgefunder ... the country is still alive because of these commanders.. this country never had any political success.. if it wasnt for the military there wud be no Pakistan.. nd I quote Mossad, RAW, CIA. "without ISI there would be no Pakistan". We poeple sit at our homes & make comments that the Generals should be ashamed of them selves whereas these people have spent their whole life defendin our country. I think you should be ashamed of URSELF for not appreciating what this General has done for the past 25+ years for Pakistan.
Concerned : My post says that US can make Pakistan a scape goat, because Pakistan played double game with US posing as an ally and accommodating Taliban and AQ. That is why US is blaming Pakistan and they are right. But for Pak allowing terrorist sanctuary in their lands, US would have finished off Taliban. When the Taliban actually left Kabul during the initial stages of the war, they went to the mountains and organized themselves with weapons and ammunition. How could this happen ? Even US is to be blamed for this because they left the routes to the mountains unguarded. Pak was fully supporting the Taliban clandestinely. Remember Kunduz Airlift when Mush organized sorties to air lift pak fighters, who was fighting along with Taliban against US, from Kunduz to Pakistan
The General is 100% correct. @ali, nothing is wrong with what he said, please do bang your head.
Proud of you General Rabbani. I wish your boss had the same guts as you do.
@ Vasan.. all the facts that u have mentioned have been given by the media. planners of 9/11 bla bla.. research my friend. read different perpectives. 9/11 alone has like a million articles/videos (videos by US citizens) proving that 9/11 was an inside job by the US them selves. in summary ur facts are different to mine. Everything action has a motive. Research on the motive of why we are being made the scapegoats and you'l find ur own facts. its easy to make statements.
Oh please --- that's the same lame excuse you gave when asked why the American's intentionally attack a remote Pakistani border outpost in the middle of the night --- the only people that believe that pathetic line are Pakistanis. Maybe you should make your leaders take a class in credibility or maybe creative thinking?
These Commanders of Pak Army have no shame at all !!! They too love living in denials and make believe world, which they have fed to Pakistani people too!! This Country's very future is at risk, while they play games!
@Polpot: "US also made a scapegoat of Pakistan when it killed OBL on their soil……… ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ US seems to be addicted to making scapegoats of Pakistan…."
Considering the US' humiliating defeat in Afghanistan at the hands of a bunch of insurgents that were no match for it, why would it NOT be addicted to making scapegoats of Pakistan? I don't think you even follow the news. When the US could invade and decimate Iraq under a pretext that turned out to be a flat-out lie, you don't think the US could be addicted to making scapegoats of Pakistan?
Before any of this let us first answer the question: How did Osama live in Abbotabad for over 5 years next door to a military academy? The answer will tell us where we stand.
@vasan: Well vasan you have completly missed the point. The discussion is about engaging the Taliban, No point of OBL has been mentioned either by the commander or by the US.
he s the man who is executing american war in FATA and here he comes with statement saying U.S is betraying....
what a logical paradox??
ShutupClinton : Here is one proof that OBL was killed in Pakistan http://tribune.com.pk/story/375786/pakistan-militants-vow-holy-war-for-bin-laden/
Thanks God our generals understand that US playing double standards with Pakistan.
@ShutupClinton: Take it easy tiger, it is not American duty to run Pakistan? Why almighty agencies had no clues about OBL? I tell you why, because cowards like you are in the rank and files of agencies. A word of advise for you, do not rot learn words of terrorists like Sepa Sahaba, Lashkare Jhangvi and JuD ok! Cowards like you can murder people with poor children used as suicide mules, I wish you dare say defeatists on our faces, you little computer terror sympethizer.
US also made a scapegoat of Pakistan when it killed OBL on their soil......... ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ US seems to be addicted to making scapegoats of Pakistan....
@Basit:
Agree with you completely
As you sow, so shall you reap.
Both, the US and Pakistan, created, trained and funded these militants.
Now,enjoy in the line of fire.
This is the way that a real general leads. Peace should be paramount within Pakistan, even if it means ignoring demands from Americans who are ready to negotiate and run away form next door and leave the turmoil at our doorsteps. Our 12 soldiers died maintaining peace and not for expanding war and turning it into never ending tit for tat responses. Policy should never be made on emotions or revenge. If it is, then you are no better than TTP or AQ.
Well done Gen. Rabbani for taking the right stance despite the losses of your men.
no need to make scapegoats of goats like us... we are more than willing to take dollars and sell everything.
Just a suggestion: Each Province must n should have Pakistan Army Head Quarters (not to suppress but to control every inch of Pakistan territory). Baluchistan must be convinced that being one of the Province it should behave in National interest not Stone age Tribal customs.
What a pathetic comment by the corps commander. Inspite of the fact that OBL was found and killed at Abbotabad, inspite of the fact that many AQ terrorists including 9/11 planners were caught in Pakistan, inspite of the fact that though they were arabs, they were protected by Pakistan in Pakistan, inspite of the fact that Quettashura exists headed by Mullah omar, The commander says that "Us is making Pakistan a scape goat". If pakistan is not to be blamed for the above endeavours and many more, who else US would blame, They dont blame without a reason, I guess.
No solutions except mutual respect, justice, honest negotiations, leave labeling Mujahiddin (USSR War) now terroris, understand respect for other soil, nation, Faith and believe integrity, culture and society. Few honest words with single effort are thousands times better than 100 years of war and propaganda. Remember this world is beautiful because of diversity………once homogenized that will be the end.
One could say it's the other way around. Blaming the US for your own lazy incompetence.
USA is right. do more....
so much is wrong with what has been said here, dont know where to bang my head!!!
