The memoir reveals that more than a dozen of her family members died in the Holocaust, including three grandparents. Her father, a former Czech diplomat, and her mother never told her the family secret.
Albright faced down the Serb tyrant Slobadan Milosevic and stopped his ethnic cleansing of Muslims; her father did the same sort of thing earlier in the century.
Albright’s late father Josef Korbel (1909-1977) is intertwined with Pakistan’s destiny. He was the head of the first UN Commission that landed in Kashmir to help India and Pakistan sort out their differences. He was a Czech diplomat favoured by India for the job because Czechoslovakia was friendly to India.
For that the All-India Muslim League was to blame, siding with the Sudeten Germans in 1938, who became an excuse for Hitler to invade Czechoslovakia. One should remember that whereas Afghanistan cast the only negative vote in the UN General Assembly on the admission of Pakistan, Czechoslovakia’s was the only abstention.
But Korbel ended up favouring Pakistan in his book Danger in Kashmir (1954) because he sensed that India, being on the wrong side in the Cold War, would not be able to prevent Communism from establishing an outpost in Kashmir.
After the Second World War, Korbel was on an important post in the Foreign Office in Prague. (He actually lived in a house abandoned by a Sudeten German industrialist, Karl Nebrich, whose family later claimed their paintings from Madeleine Albright.)
The Korbels did not have a Hebrew name. It appears that they took a safe name to ward off suspicion of the Jew-hating Slavs, and later, Jew-hating Germans. Korbel relates to ‘crow’. Joseph Shipley in his book of roots gives it the meaning ‘related to the beak of a raven’. He also tells us that in architecture ‘Corbel’ means a projection jutting out from the wall like a crow’s beak.
We know that in French, ‘crow’ is ‘corbeau’ which comes in a changed form from the Latin ‘corvus’. The Romans got it from the Greeks who called the bird ‘korax’. The name was clearly derived from the noise the bird makes.
The Urdu version is ‘kavva’ but we know that such formations come about through the elision of an ‘r’. In Punjabi the name of the bird is ‘kaan’. The Slav version is ‘krava’ (close to our ‘kavva’ with the ‘r’ dropped) but ‘kos’ is also found in Serbo-Croat.
The province of Yugoslavia, Kosovo, is actually called Kosovo Polye. ‘Kosovo’ means of crows or blackbirds. ‘Polye’ means ‘field’. 600 years ago this was where the Serbs were defeated by the Turks. By the time they were finished, there were blackbirds eating the corpses on the battlefield.
John Updike, reviewing a biography of the great writer Franz Kafka, wrote: “In 1900, some 85 per cent of the roughly 35,000 German-speaking citizens in the Prague population were Jewish. The Kafkas were unusual in bearing a Czech name — ‘kavka’ means jackdaw — and in speaking Czech at home.” The word is a diminutive of ‘kav’ (crow).
The idea was to allay the Slav nationalism among the Czechs. In the 1897 pogroms, the Kafkas were spared. The Korbels, too, were not only spared but Josef Korbel was taken under his wing by the great Czech leader, Jan Masaryk.

"Ottoman never endorsed the jewsland in palestine Abdul Hammed even said i rather die and dont wanna be remember as a seller of palestine land and we all know what exactlly happend."
Sure, in the Treaty of Sevres the Caliph endorsed Palestine as the Jewish National Home. Shouldn't surprise you since his predecessor Abdul Hamid II gave the reason for not deeding Palestine to the Jews was that the Arabs fought for the Empire so with the subsequent Arab Revolt that reason ended.
"Solomon cant u see the history -"
Maybe I can but you can't. How can you know? By doing your own research, pro and con, to see which facts hold up and in what context. Good luck!
@Solomon 2, What Nation of league u talking about those who brought all the jews to palestine and declear jewshland shamefully why didnot they made in Europe where so called Holocaust happend ?? and cant be challenged by law or talked in the name of freedom and its a white lie Ottoman never endorsed the jewsland in palestine Abdul Hammed even said i rather die and dont wanna be remember as a seller of palestine land and we all know what exactlly happend. There homes were anexed and that still going on in Jarusalem and sorrounding areas by jews and Solomon cant u see the history and u think we are dumb and dont know why u trying to teach us.
Please keep in mind that Madeline Albright justified the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children in the 90s from US sanction on the American show "60 minutes". When asked if she thought having sanctions that killed so many children was worth it, she said to her "it was worth it". No matter what her life story is and was, and what happened to her family during the Nazi holocaust, this statement of hers says enough about her character. The video clip of her statement is available on youtube.
@Ali Tanoli: Your question is incorrectly framed and contains many fallacies. The declaration of Palestine as the Jewish National Home and the establishment of the British Mandate followed WWI, not WWII, as part of the global movement away from empires (the Russian, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian having disintegrated) and towards separate nation-states.
The charge laid upon both Jews and Arabs (by the Caliph and the League of Nations) was that each respect the civil and property rights of the other in ex-Ottoman lands. This the Jews have done (Israel remains 20% Arab) while the Arabs have not (about 800,000 Jews were kicked out of Arab lands starting with Transjordan in 1920; remaining Jewish population in them is miniscule.) The violence of Arab upon Jew extended to Mandate territory until after WWII the British finally declared they were terminating their role in the Mandate, thus compelling the establishment of Israel as a nation-state.
By the Ottoman standard Arabs who violently rejected the establishment of Israel are a population in revolt and because of that surrendered their civil and property rights. Their descendants live on the world's charity and their ancestors hatred, reinforced by a U.N. bureaucracy that lives for that purpose. A small part of their rent-seeking efforts (as economists characterize it) is spent mis-educating outsiders like yourself to provide them with money and offensive weaponry.
Many times Pakistanis have proclaimed that Israel owes something to the Arabs. How often have Pakistanis considered what the Arabs may owe to Israel? And again, why is minimizing the tragedy of Jews in the 20th century so important to so many Pakistanis?
@Syed Ahmed: "an exaggerated lie"? My grandparents died in the Holocaust along with most of my aunts and uncles. The Germans kept records which have been reconstructed: at least 5.8 million dead.
Write with more sensitivity next time. And answer me this: why is minimizing the Jewish tragedy of the 20th century so important to you?
@You Said It: I am still wondering what message the Author is trying to give here?
If pakistan and some say iran never send a immunition for Bosnian and croats it might be a no muslim or croats had left today. it was worst than angola civil war.
I read the article and tried to figure out what it meant. I failed, admittedly my lack of understanding, as there were some lenghty comments on the material.
A Peshawary.
@ Khaled sb:
I was unable to figure out the conclusion/opinion from the article. Or maybe the publisher did not print page 2 of your article today. i also agree with Tch Tch & Prabhjyot Singh Madan.
Dear Author Sir, I read your articles with great interest but this time I am disappointed.
nice article...ka ka..ka ;)
Before harping on about how the US did wonders to stop the killing of Muslims in Bosnia, the author should've kept in mind that the US and other western powers were responsible for orchestrating the violent dissolution of Yugoslavia that started the ensuing wars in the first place. This is no conspiracy theory, it is now a matter of public record. Now they're dead set on doing the exact same thing to Pakistan.
@ tch tch, Great work! Really liked your logical approach which was more meaningful than the article itself!
Dear Khaled Ahmed sir
what is it with muslims world-wide? Any mention of a Jew and conspiracy theories float. Madelene was a great human - she saved so many Albanian muslims- but muslims hate her. Even attacking USA so soon after Serbian war was according to me a trechery. USA sent its army to europe and stopped genocide of Muslims. It could have closed its eyes like other european nations.
I've been to Kafka's grave in Prague and have seen the names of his sisters on the holocaust memorial in the same city. Madeline Albright took her generals to task, reportedly saying: "You keep telling me what a good military you command. Now go and do something in Bosnia."
What a useless article. Starts with an important historical fact, and then digresses into inanity about the 99 names of Crow.
the holocaust is an exaggerated lie
Shameful Hagiography. This is the Madeline Albright (Or Maria Jana Korbel) who thought Half a million Iraqi Children were "Worth it". Not a modren day Joan of arc.
I dont believe her sudden discovery of her Jewish roots( After WP confronted her with irrefutable proof). Its pretty laughable really. Her Dads Art heist aside and Madeline attempts to keep the loot(Wired 1999).Madeline went out of her way to cover up her Jewish/Chzech roots (For reasons known only to her, Cold war, political expediency, fear of the glass ceiling etc). She cant even claim the threat of Nazi persecution like her late father,She avoided family and childhood friends(Such as first cousin Dagmar Deml based in UK whom she treated "like Dirt", NYT) and purposely omitted details in all officals bios till its inadvertent discovery.
Albright faced down the Serb tyrant Slobadan Milosevic and stopped his ethnic cleansing of Muslims; her father did the same sort of thing earlier in the century.
Even in Bosnia what exactly were her achievement??. 5 years the west had a unilateral arms embargo on the Bosniaks and let the Serbs(Armed by Russains) to massacre at will. Dutch UN "peackeepers" handed over 7000 men to their death. I dont think it could have gotten any worse. The worst was allowed infact facilitated by NATO.
The Change only came when the Croats and the Bosniaks teamed up and were on the verge of over runnig the SPRK. Croatian-Bosnian offensive of 1995 (which reversed Serb territorial gains from the 70 percent Pale had held since 1992 to less than 50 percent within a matter of weeks. Then Dayton accords was hastedly called and Holbroke brokered the deal. I think Bosnia would now be a more functional country had the croats and Bosniaks allowed there imminent victory and not a NATO imposed freezing of the conflict. The Dysfunctional Bosnian state and lack of any remorse of Serbs a sacrifice for Madeline and Holbrookes career/myth building.
Madeline then spent rest of her career constructing her myth and providing legitimacy to every American "Humanitarian" Adventure (R2P for the initiated). As she once told Powell What’s the point of having this superb military you’re always talking about, if we can’t use it?
Thank u sir for sharing such a beautifull story in E,T. peace on earth.
