LAHORE:

The federal government told the Lahore High Court on Monday that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani could not be disqualified till the Supreme Court issued a detailed order in the contempt of court case.

Deputy Attorney General Abdul Hayee Gillani, representing the federal government on two petitions against the PM for remaining in office despite being found guilty of contempt, asked the court for more time to file written replies. At this, LHC Chief Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed adjourned the hearing till May 11.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Inqilab Chairman Rana Ilmuddin Ghazi and Advocate Shahid Naseem Gondal filed the petitions through their counsel AK Dogar. They said that Gilani ceased to be prime minister of Pakistan the moment he was pronounced a convict and punished under Article 204(2) of the Constitution.

Under Article 199(1)(b) of the Constitution, the petitioners said, the respondent should be required to show under what law allowed he claimed to hold the office of prime minister. The petitioners said that Gilani should be restrained from acting as prime minister.
