Tennis: Aqeel clinches clay-court event

KARACHI: Top-seed Aqeel Khan clinched the Subhe Nau National Clay Court Tennis Championship men’s singles title after defeating Mohammad Abid 6-3, 6-1. He had defeated fifth-seed Imran Shaukat in the semi-final, while Abid had outplayed second-seed Yasir Khan. “Playing in a clay-court event is a good thing and we should have more tournaments on clay,” Aqeel told The Express Tribune. “We need these tournaments, especially the players from Sindh because we don’t have any clay courts here. So it is always challenging for us to play on clay.” Meanwhile, Sara Mansoor won the women’s singles title by defeating Iman Qureshi 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. Ahmed Babar lifted the boy’s U18 singles event defeating Mudassir Murtaza 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, while Nofil Kaleem won the boy’s U14 singles event as he outplayed Muzammil Murtaza 6-2, 6-4.
