During the ceremony, the Sharif brothers distributed around 1,296 flat keys among workers and announced the labour wage to be increased from Rs7,000 to Rs9,000 per month.
After PML-N’s October 28, 2011 rally in Lahore which was addressed by Shahbaz Sharif, the brothers decided not to address any gathering together for uncertain reasons, but the recent announcement of a protest movement by the party against the government has seemingly forced the brothers to unite.
After completing the due formalities at the gathering, Nawaz Sharif began lashing out against the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) led coalition government and urged the participants to support the party in protecting the judiciary which is ‘in hot water’.
Nawaz Sharif, while defending his protest call, said that the government has firmly decided to defy the rulings of the Supreme Court come what may.
He added that the Pakistani nation, including workers, had restored the judiciary and they would never allow the PPP government to ridicule the judiciary and if it happens, they will put the country into chaos and anarchy.
He further said that the current rulers have made the country a laughing stock in the world and this has forced him to stand up only for the sake of the country. He said that if the nation makes the right decision in the upcoming elections then he will end all prevailing issues of the country.

@Meekal Ahmed: You are right sir. They are not paying from their pocket. They don't even care about budget deficit. There is an Urdu saying "halwaye ki dokan aur dada jee ki fatheha". Regards, Mirza
It is a lot easier to just do this but the impact on economy and inflation is devastating. The businesses and services pass on this change to the consumer hence everything becomes dearer and the impact of hike is nullified, and sometimes becomes negative, in the long run.
are they paying for the higher wages from their pockets?
@Saleem sb, Although there is no hard and fast rule, but many trade unions force employers to implement it. Minimum wage carries a psychological influence on employers mind.
I wish they had increased it to 12K. Satisfactory increment nevertheless.
I am actually shocked that Pakistan has a minimum wage? What are the checks and balances in place to ensure that employers comply with this law?
I am actually shocked that Pakistan has a minimum wage? What are the checks and balances in place to ensure that employers comply with this law? NONE!
It's just an eye wash to garner votes!
People recommending that minimum wage should be increased more do not realize that it will render labour jobless. Who will hire a driver for 15000 or a Mali for 15000 ?
People employing 2-3 employees will hire one person and make him do all the work. Same will be done in factories. It is very difficult to manage in 10,000 or even in 15000 but it is better than nothing. Industries are closing down, exports are reducing so where will labourers work ? Improving the economy is more important than just announcing minimum wage which will never be implemented. People still work for 4-5 thousand a month :)
Having seen whole the scenario, i come to the conclusion that, the parties are not interested in the welfare of the people of Pakistan, they are all interested in their pet interest,in gaining power only.
According to my personal survey, people are not interested in politics due to joblessness created by load shedding and gas shortage.
they said,''what the leaders are doing? collecting money for banks abroad, they have taken their business across the sea, they are not serious in resolving the common man's problems,so they are avoiding politics.
@Hasan Awan: Take it easy. Instead of yelling at "Pakistan politics", why don't you urge your leaders to start performing instead of bickering. (No I don't belong to PTI). That will reduce your misery and you would not need to defend their deeds through personal attacks.
This political race to surpass eachother is atleast working for the workers...!
@Hasan Awan: dear i live in Lahore i m from Gujrat, i belong to this region my borther
Laborers should get two salaries, one from Federal government and one from Government of Punjab. Talk is cheap.
@Pakistan politics: Some of the examples are mention of People of GT road, Politicians of GT road, Takht e Lahore Politics and just sift through your previous comments and you will find these words. On Tsunami march news 10 minutes ago you again used the word GT ROAD and everyone knows when someone mentions this word what they are referring to and which region is refered to my friend.
Nawaz Shareef is the only REAL hope for Pakistan.
@Hasan Awan: what do u mean by "certain region" ?
@Pakistan politics: You have a personal hatred problem not only against PMLN but against a certain region. I have read your previous one hundred comments and all are same and all Are Anti One region and anti PMLN so i dont expect anything good in your comments as usual.
As usual Bashing of Nawaz and PMLN rather than Appreciation in the comments. Just ask a person who will benefit from Rs 2000 pay hike. The biased regional news readers who just hate Hate Nawaz for nothing are not doing justice to him. Nawaz is bashed for no reason whatever he will do. All of the people comment here by sitting in other provinces and then commenting. Just visit Punjab and then compare your province with Punjab and see the governance here and the I will give you a shut up call.
Enough should be enough. Every good move must be appreciated and this is a great move on Labour day and it must be appreciated. Now hatred of irrationality against a certain region and a certain party is crossing all bounds and all of them who are doing that are not doing justice and are blind.
Leaders like Nawaz Shareef knows how a poor laborer can feel because they earn same income . He pays 5000 rupees a year in income tax, inst it? about same wage as a mazdoor.
No body will think about the modern day labourers. check them out at https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=290642387691536&set=a.288659891223119.69897.288653557890419&type=1&theater
I hate both of them, liars, hypocrites
The Federal Government increased the common man wages from Rs.6000 to Rs.7000 in the year 2010 and there was no announcement made for increase of wages for a common man in the federal budget, but the government of PPP increased the salaries and perks of government servants and the legislators by totally ignoring the agony of a common man.
I am glad to read that at least the provincial government of Punjab gave a second thought and increase the per month wages by Rs.2000.
Now a labourer will get a minimum salary of Rs.9000 per month, though the inflation since 2010 has been increased in the country by 300%.
In my opinion, keeping in view of the present circumstances and the inflation in the country, the minimum wage would have been increased by than 100% so that an ordinary labourer would at least have got Rs.15,000 per month.
Well technically they increased the minimum wage only by 1000, as after federal government's announcement the minimum wage stood at 8000 already. Now the question is how effectively the provincial governments have enforced the minimum wage law?
Its all good. Even if this is how the Punjab government could be moved to do something for the ordinary people, I welcome their tit for tat incentives for the poor. That's why it is important that the governments complete their terms, as the final year will be the most people oriented.
In what capacity NS is attending government sponsored gatherings? Can someone tell him that no labour can sustain even "single-person" family within Rs9000 per month! Agreed the current government is corrupt but Why Shareefs have been supporting it for last four years? Why NS always fled away to UK for medical check-ups at crucial times? What about Shahbaz Shareef's performance in Punjab this time? As an opposition party, NS performed even worst than PPP of 1997-99 era.
Forget the nation, just increase the wages by Rs 2000 for the people who work like slaves in your palaces. That will be a huge accomplishment for you !
