SHABQADAR:

The Awami National Party (ANP) sprang to the beleaguered prime minister’s defence on Saturday with Provincial Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Barrister Arshad Abdullah condemning the Supreme Court’s verdict in the NRO contempt of court case.

Addressing ANP workers after a prize distribution ceremony at a school in Charsadda district, the minister said: “If the opposition party (PML-N) threatens us by street power, we can also use people’s power by organising a long march towards Lahore… such actions from the opposition will only result in instability in the country.”

The minister added that everyone should respect the elected parliament, which is the supreme institution of the country.

The Supreme Court’s verdict declaring Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in contempt of court has created much political chaos with the PML-N and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf calling for Gilani’s resignation.

Fata operation

Abdullah said there should be an operation against militants in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata). “Due to the poor policies of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, terrorists increased their influence in the province,” he said, adding “they were allowed to organise themselves in the area.”

Nizam-e-Adl

The provincial minister further said that after the Nizam-e-Adl regulation Act (order of justice system), nearly 100 judges have been appointed in Swat.

The regulation, a controversial act approved by President Asif Ali Zardari after parliamentary approval on April 13, 2009, formally introduced sharia law in Malakand division.
