HYDERABAD: Two days after the police and Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Hyderabad caught 60 students in a raid at an illegal examination centre in Tandojam on Wednesday, political parties and residents demanded arrests.

The students were actually registered to appear for an exam at Government Boys High School Tandojam and were believed to be sitting in for others.

However, a little while later, all the students were released without being booked when the some influential people butted in.

The leaders and workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), Sindh Taraqi Passand Party (STPP), Awami Tehreek and Pakistan Peoples Party- Shaheed Bhutto protested with the residents. They organised a sit-in at Hyderabad-Mirpurkhas Road, blocking traffic for two hours.

“We demand that the people running the centre be arrested immediately and the teachers and board officers who assisted them in the activity be exposed,” said Gulzar Sangrani, a JSQM leader.

The protesters also condemned the attack on a relative of Prof. Muneer Ahmed Shaikh, who is believed to have tipped off the police about the illegal centre. Shaikh had complained that that the police were not registering an FIR for the attack on his cousin, Mushtaq Shaikh, who was shot.

Sher Ali Rajput, a sector in charge of MQM, said that such blatant cases of cheating were destroying education in Sindh. “But the lack of concern shown by the provincial and the federal governments is a still bigger conspiracy.”

He also demanded that an FIR be registered. The STPP’s Hyder Shah alleged that board officials were minting money by allowing illegal centres and cheating to flourish.

BISE Hyderabad looks over nine districts. This year 100,613 students have enrolled for Secondary School Certificate exams while only around 500 have been booked for cheating.
