ISLAMABAD:

America has a long tradition of embracing foreign students and it continues to encourage Pakistani students to benefit from its world-class universities.

The executive director of US Education Foundation in Pakistan (USEF), Rita Akhter, stated this on Friday at the closing ceremony of the South Asia Tour of American college representatives. The tour aimed to raise awareness about educational opportunities available in the US.

During the tour, school visits and general fairs were organised by US universities in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad; an average of 15 local institutions participated from each city. In addition to meeting hundreds of prospective students and university representatives had a chance to interact with local institutional representatives, including guidance counsellors, head masters, faculty members, and school administrators.

Speaking at the ceremony, US Country Public Affairs Officer Mitchell Moss said, “Our governments may not always see eye to eye on everything, but we have always agreed on the importance of education. And let me be clear, our doors are wide open to Pakistani students to study in the US.”

Of the 650,000 foreign students who attended US universities last year, over 5,000 were from Pakistan, many of whom received full or partial scholarships from American universities or the US government.
