Pakistan, France setting up commission

French car manufacturers eying Pakistan’s market.

LAHORE: Pakistan and France are establishing a joint commission for economic cooperation in a bid to give a boost to bilateral trade and economic relations while French car manufacturers have also shown interest in Pakistan market and may have their presence here in the near future.

French Ambassador Philippe Thiebaud announced this while speaking at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Thursday.

“Large companies of France have recognised Pakistan’s potential and are interested in making investment here,” he said.

The ambassador said France was striving to develop a Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) Plus mechanism for giving easy access for Pakistani products to the European Union market. “This will give a considerable boost to Pakistan’s exports,” he said.

France is also providing financial and technical assistance for hydropower projects to help overcome the energy crisis.

On French cooperation in the educational sector, Thiebaud said over 600 Pakistani students were pursuing Masters and PhD degrees in France, adding Paris was also working with the Higher Education Commission to facilitate more students desiring to study in France.

Speaking on the occasion, LCCI Senior Vice President Kashif Younis Meher asked French companies to consider Pakistan as a potential market for their brands keeping in view the country’s huge population and the lifestyle of rich.
