A man was maimed on Wednesday for marrying a woman eight years ago without her family’s consent.
Police said Jan Shams’s nose and lips were cut allegedly by some men from his in-laws. He was taken to Shaikh Zayed Hospital, where doctors treating him said that he would require a plastic surgery.
They said while his condition was out of danger, his would take nearly two months to recover.
Police said Shams, a resident of Mudh Manthar in Rajanpur, had married his neighbour Iqra eight years ago without the consent of her family.
They said after the couple eloped, their families took the case to the panchayat, which had decided that Shams’s family pay Rs800,000 to Iqra’s family.
Shams’ father, Jam Imam Din, told The Express Tribune that the money was paid to the girl’s family immediately after the panchayat order so that they should not harm his son.
He said some of his family elders had refused to accept him back for bringing a bad name to the family. The couple had then started living alone, he said.
However, eight years after the incident, Imam Din said, five men from Iqra’s family had brutally tortured his son. He said he learnt about the incident from some neighbours.
“This is a violation of the panchayat ruling. Despite receiving such a huge amount, Iqra’s family did not leave my son,” he said.
He said her family had also threatened to kill his grandson (Shams’s son). Imam Din appealed to the chief minister to take notice of the incident and demanded police protection for his family.
In his statement to the police Shams said Abdul Rahim, Lal Baksh, Amjad, Bilal and Ishaq had abducted him on his way home. He said they had beaten him so that he was nearly unconscious.
He said they cut his nose and lips with a knife and then abandoned him on the road.
Investigation Officer Akbar Khan told The Tribune that an FIR was registered against the five accused. No arrests had been made so far.
