A WiFi system has been installed in the campus and students can connect their laptops to the internet round the clock, announced Sabiha Mansoor, the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) vice chancellor on Monday.
The announcement came minutes after 4,600 students were given laptops by Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif in a ceremony.
Students of graduate and post graduate programmes at the university were given laptops at the event, which was originally scheduled to be chaired by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, but could not make it due to other commitments.
The vice chancellor in her address said that the number of laptop recipients in the university reflected its high standards of education.
Welcoming Maryam Nawaz, an LCWU alumnus, the VC said that it was a moment of pride for the university to receive her as an “influential young politician.”
She said she could see Maryam Nawaz as the future prime minister of Pakistan.
Dr Mansoor congratulated the students who received laptops and said she hoped that the gift from the Punjab Government would help enhance their capabilities.
Speaking on the occasion Maryam Nawaz said that the Punjab government was focusing on promoting young talent for the improvement of education standards.
“The chief minister is determined to launch more programmes for the youth,” she said.
Maryam Nawaz said that women had an equally important role as men in bringing prosperity to the country. “That is why the Punjab government is investing in women’s education,” she said.
She said that the establishment of new women universities and introduction of special packages for them by the PML-N was the proof of the party’s commitment to women’s empowerment.
The main ground of the university was decorated for the ceremony attended by a large number of students and faculty. Students chanted slogans in favour of the chief guest saying: Maryam Nawaz is the future prime minister.
At the conclusion of the ceremonies students sang national songs and a Guard of Honour was presented by the Punjab Police.

Dear readers, La la right siad if your money is used on you first why you are not digesting that. This is not Income support program to make the public beggers and put the loan in own pockets. Mr. CM is trying to handover a tool for research and earning. When some one of you will get then you will realise the worth. And votes cant be purchased by such actions. This thinking is the insult of whole Nation. Be sophisticated please. If this had been the National Criteria, Musharraf and PMLQ would not had been among loosers..... !!!!!!!!!!!
Hey guys!!! where is my laptop???
From the money which is using in distributing the laptops in Punjab, Mr. CM why should you not used this money in the production of electricity, or in any health care project, or to build new schools etc. Please be care in using the tax money of poor people of Pakistan.
If there had been across the board accountability and scams like yellow cab had been properly accounted for! this new political bribe would have not occurred. Who has given the right to these politicians to spend goverment exchequre on their political point socring? It is wrong who so ever dose it is not PML(N)alone, others also do the same way.
A Peshawary
I think distributing laptops is stupid and ineffective, shabaz sharif is doing this to gain votes and to convert the youth to his side, he has spent (I should say wasted)so much money that we could do a lot with it for the country. Pakistan contains nearly 18 crore population and 10 crore is the youth(under 25) and he has distributed laptops to just 1 lakh and some thousand youngsters, this is not enough. If he really wants to do something beneficial and propitious for the youth, he should make buildings in every corner of the country which should be for the youth to use computers for study purpose (free of cost), high class libraries and English medium institutions (free of cost), student counselling courses (free of cost) rather than distributing expensive laptops as Pakistan is in a deficiency for all these things. Were these politicians sleeping in the past few years? When the time is very near for the elections they have started distributing laptops, building bridges etc and in the past, they were just sleeping and didn't even think about the nation. So this makes pretty obvious that giving these people votes is just futile and pointless as they have lost our hope.
Ms Maryam Nawaz, laptops need electricity to charge its batteries, please ask you Papa to try to resolve energy crises.
What is the problem If some of People Money collected by Government is not wasted in World tour.
At least someting is returned to GENERAL PUBLIC
PML(N), please try to solve Electricity and Gas shortage problems and stop buying votes.
@Iram: she belongs to Shareef family who were once the Royals of Pakistan. they are telling us the they still rule us..
First wasted money on yellow cab scheme to get the votes of poor community and now laptops to get votes of the youth. Hope the laptops are not sold in the market as it is an expensive luxury. Best of luck on distributing laptops but what is next?
In which capacity you are distributing these lap tops, you are not government official.
If PMLN cannot convince the youth to support and vote for them, then the oldest trick in the trade is to buy them. Laptops Galore!!!!!
Thus is called bribe!!!!!!!. BTW why only a member of Sharif family is entrusted with laptop distribution?
